I am a computer science student looking to make myself more attractive to employers. I would like to double major, but don’t have an idea of a combination that will make me more competitive in the workplace? I was thinking Comp Sci and Business Management, but management doesn’t really fit me. I have time to declare because I start my freshman year this fall. Also I have about 30 credits, which would allow me to graduate in four years.
statistics, applied math, math
Most research shows (and many people here agree) that a double major won’t make you much more attractive to employers. Instead, it gives you a second career route you can take. If you did say, business, you could go the CS or business route, but it would be unlikely that either employer would care about the other degree except for specific jobs, such as those in automatic stock trading software. But for the vast majority of jobs in either field, it won’t matter much if any.
You can always minor or just take classes in a field, there’s no reason to double major to be more competitive. IMO, double majors are useful for people with two strong passions that could work in either or both field, or simply want to study both at that high of a level for personal reasons. A masters (BS/MS program if possible) may be even better and less classes. I don’t think searching for a second major when one is not obvious is the right route to go.
In terms of fields, all of the ones list above are common minors with CS. Lots of business as well. That goes for double majors as well.
BrownParent read my mind. CS and Statistics would be a killer combination. Finance or Math would be good, too. But as mentioned, a double major would only marginally improve your chances of getting a job, and I don’t know if it’s worth it. Minoring in one of those areas instead would be more cost effective.
