Best computer science schools after top 20

What are the best schools for computer science once you get past the traditional top 20? Especially interested in southeast and possibly northeast. The top 20 are out of our price range (looking for great programs that are less than $30,000 for out of state tuition). Student resides in SC but is hoping for higher ranked program than Clemson. Any suggestions appreciated.

I assume that you won’t qualify for financial aid, otherwise you should consider private schools also.

So for example UNC-Chapel hill with a tuition of $28K is ok? Or was that $30K figure really for tuition plus room plus board.

Obviously on the list regardless is SUNY Stony Brook.
2012-2013 was about $29K INCLUDING Room and Board.

Rutgers
Penn State
Florida
UVA
VA Tech
NC State
Texas A&M
Pitt
Tennessee
George Mason
Stony Brook
UConn
UDel
UBuffalo
UMass

Would also consider private if generous with financial aid. Our son is bright but coming from SC schools, doesn’t have the higher SAT scores that would earn merit aid from the ivies–math 700, verbal 600, writing 680. He is now at the SC Governor’s School for Math & Science and this year as a junior is taking (and getting A’s in) Calc BC, Calc-based physics, and college level Comp Sci. Will take SAT and ACT again, but doesn’t do well on standardized tests.
We aren’t rich and family gross income is around $90,000 per yr with four kids, three of whom will be in college at the same time.

I don’t know about rankings but the University of Alabama has a computer science program in their engineering school that I have heard great things about and my son looked at pretty hard. If your son could raise his SAT just a little, he can get some serious money, providing he applies by Dec 1.

An out-of-state first time freshman student who meets the December 1st scholarship priority deadline, has a 30-31 ACT or 1330-1390 SAT score [critical reading and math scores only] and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will be selected as a UA Scholar and will receive the value of 2/3 tuition* for four years.

There is also another $2500 a year on top of this for being an engineering major, which comp sci is there. They just redid the computer science progression for next year so if you are looking at it, make sure it is the new one.

90K and three of them in college at the same time? You should look into some private Yschools, you could go almost free at some of them. State schools might not be the best in your case. As to which schools, I don’t know enough to advise. Maybe you should post on the finaid forum.
