Best Construction Engineering Program

Anyone have an opinion on the best, or one of the best, CEM or CET programs in California and more specifically SoCal. I'm interested in the PRACTICE, hands on aspects of construction and not really too much theory.

I plan on a new career in the design-build field, with more emphasis on build. B/c my focus will be between light residential consturction (single family to duplexes to condos), to moderately-sized multi-unit (aound 50 units) apartments at the largest scale, I figure I can probably handle the design aspects with less schooling. Thus I'm more interested in the applied side of engineering.

I've have a doctorate in a completely diff field so I've done the academics thing. I'm leaving the hardcore research and theorizing to the academics.

I'll ask around at the office.

Still, if you want to work in SoCal, don't underestimate the necessary basis of theory that's required in understanding seismic systems... SoCal's one of the toughest places to be in design-build, even in wood construction, because of the stringent CBC requirements.

Perusing the departments in the area, USC's Viterbi has a construction engineering and management masters program that you might be interested in. UCLA seems to be more theory-oriented.

I'll get back to you with info from the folks who are native to the area, though.

Thanks, let me know what you find out. :)
