I'm signing up for this program where you travel to a country and stay with a few different families for a week each then go to a camp with a bunch of other kids my age. I've never really been abroad so I was wondering if you guys could help me decide between these countries. The things that are important to me are nice people, food, that people speak some english, and that I get to see a different culture.
Here are my options:
Australia (might be too similar to US but sounds amazing)
Belgium (I like how its close to other countries)
Switzerland (same)
Italy(I think its full though)
Netherlands
Holland
Germany

I would say Germany or Holland

FYI, Holland is in the Netherlands. Pretty redundant.

Western Europe for the win! Seriously, transportation is easy - you can hop on the train or whatever. Switzerland is next door to Germany. The Netherlands aren't too far off. Same goes with Belgium. And then there's Italy as peninsula. Heck, most of your list comprises those speaking Germanic languages! Swiss-German, etc.

france/italy, just cuz its so beautiful over there. i went there for summer when i was 9..the sights were astonishing!

germany is cool too

for france and germany, you'll have to know at least a little bit of their language, pretty cocky ppl if you dont speak a few words to them first in their language

France and Germany are a safe bet. In most of the European countries, the second language taught is usually French/German.

japan japan japan!!! nihon for the win

I agree with tonks, I would want to go to Japan! Amazing culture. That or somewhere like South Africa, if that is possible.

did you last two not read his post or something

when you study abroad, do classes run in english or other language??

I'm thinking about switzland because it seems beautiful and is very close to all the other major countries I'd like to visit. What do you guys think about switzerland?

Where are you signing up for this program? Seems pretty interesting~ Is there a website?

Try UCLA Education Abroad Program for starters.

Talk to the EAP office or from wherever agency that's sponsoring the program. It could vary drastically from how they handle you in the respective countries. It's better to talk to them or past students of those programs than to get vacation-esque descriptions from us (assuming that some of us had even been to Switzerland).

If you want to travel to one of those countries, then definetely choose Italy.Italy is the best combination of what you are looking for.I have been to all of those countries and I am sure that Italy can offer you what you are looking for.Have you got a chance to choose a city in which you would like to stay?

r30028, yes. LOL

hehe, ya, but couldn't resist =D

I hate to break it to the Japanophiles, but...

Japan's not really that great. Before you accuse me of anything, bear in mind that I have lived there for about 2 years, and I've traveled from Tokyo down to Kagoshima. It's not like I don't know what Japan is like.

And seriously, it's not this super wonderful great happy fun land. Read Dogs and Demons if you want to know what I'm talking about.

And for the OP: I would do Belgium, if only for the beauty and beer.

how do you guys know all the language...i dont think classes are run in english are they??

Dang, is it worth it to study abroad in Japan then?

dnduswo,

Many countries (most, to my knowledge) actually have SOME classes in English.

rosedust,

Yes. Just don't expect this happy super beautiful fun land of joy. Japan's a country like others: it has ups and downs.
