Anyone have some input on which cellphone provider has the best coverage in the williamsburg area? What's the strength of 3g and 2g for verizon/sprint/att? I don't want to be stuck trying to get a signal for 2 years hah.

I have never had any problems with Verizon in Williamsburg.

Do NOT get AT&T! They have horrible coverage on campus for some reason. I often get no reception inside of buildings and don’t even get reception outside some times!

EDIT: Also, I’m pretty sure that Verizon has the best service in Williamsburg. I’ve heard that Sprint can be shoddy, though not as bad as AT&T. I also have a friend with T-Mobile who says he gets good reception on campus.

So what do Iphone owners do for service? Get a different phone or run around the campus looking for a signal?

I have an iPhone and I have to go outside to use the phone, and receive texts anywhere from ontime to 30 minutes late. It varies by room, however. In some buildings I get a decent signal. There is wi-fi all over Williamsburg, so email and the internet works everywhere.

But yeah, Datkid hit it on the nose.

Verizon wireless has never failed daughter, three years on campus.

In-laws there have Verizon.

AT&T works fine outside but indoor coverage is spotty. I needed the much higher 3G speeds on the go so I got AT&T but also bought a Skype subscription. $60/yr for unlimited inbound and outbound calls, and it worked great on campus because of the fast internet. Between the two I had great internet speeds on my cell phone, plus reliable phone service in the dorm. I could also use Skype on my cell phone over the campus wi-fi if I was away from my computer and didn’t have an AT&T signal indoors.

You can also get a landline installed to your room for $50 that offers free incoming and local calls, which can slightly compensate for poor signal quality.

I wish this had come out sooner… this will be an AT&T student’s best friend at William and Mary: http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/why/3gmicrocell/

If you’re fine with slightly slower internet speeds, Verizon provides much better coverage all around and that should be your pick.

I’m thinking verizon since ATT’s family plan is 30 dollars for messaging (***?) and I can choose any carrier regardless of what my parents desire now. The Droid Incredible is quite impressive, I just hope I’m not giving up a great experience on the evo 4g. Regardless I am happy I have options. So the general consensus is: Verizon>>>Sprint>>>>>>>>>ATT?
Sprint being a bit worse than Verizon but both Verizon and Sprint beating out ATT? Thanks everyone for responding, I’m sure other incoming students have benefited as well.

With the evo 4g launch looming and the 12 month upgrade (vs 22 month for Verizon I believe) plan since I’m a “premier” customer I am more divided than ever between Sprint and Verizon. Someone said reception was shoddy, but I’d like to have a bit more input than that. I know verizon is good and I’ll go with them if I have to but it’s hard to turn down the 4.3 inch evo beast for the same price with an opportunity to upgrade again in a year. I’m a bit of a gadget guy. Anyone have more input on Sprint vs Verizon?

Verizon, never had a problem with it while I was there.
