My daughter will be doing a study abroad semester this fall in Edinburgh. We are trying to figure out what is the best Credit and ATM card to use with the least amount of banking fees incurred.
If anyone has experience to share, we would appreciate it!

Bummer I can't correct the typo in the title, sorry :(

From what I understand (you’ll have to double check this), Capital One is the only company that doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees, etc. But I would think that setting up a bank account in the host country would be your best bet.

You can use Bank of America ATM cards at Barclays without a fee through their global ATM alliance.

My daughter is going to St. Andrews. I got a Chase British Air card. There are no foreign transaction fees. I have also read that Capitol One is good.

We went with Capitol One for the no foreign transaction fee policy as well.

Son did study abroad in Scotland as well.

He was able to use his BOA debit card without fee (through Barclays). We did have to notify BOA of his study abroad dates so they would not think there was a problem with someone using his card and not be him).

If your daughter already has a debit card, call her bank for details before getting a new card.

Great suggestions. We will start by looking into these options. Thanks for the advice!

does anybody know if chase has any partnerships with banks in france, germany and switzerland (like b of a and barclays)?

Horrors! S is going to France at the end of June for a summer job, and has a position there for the following year, probably starting in September, so may remain in Europe in the interim. He currently has a BOA account. Will that work well in France, or should he be looking for something else? Need to act fast, if so.

D has Bank of America; she has used her debit card without fees at Barclays in the UK and at BNP Paribas in other parts of Europe. She did notify them ahead of time of her travel plans. It’s also the only bank that is both in our home town and on her college campus several states away.
