Anyone have any experience/advice regarding shipping a car across the country for college students? Looking for a recommendation of a specific transport company. We will need to get a compact/mid size sedan from the Southeast to Colorado. (Also interested in hearing about decisions to instead sell the car at home and buy another car at the college location.) We’ve already been considering the pros and cons of even having a car on campus, the ability to use public transportation, zip cars, etc., so really just looking for input on the recommended shipping company or the sell/purchase alternative. Thanks!
lakeviking, see this thread called “Long distances movers and moving.”
Ask a couple of car dealers in your area who they use. Rule of thumb for the cost is about $1 per mile. So the price can get up there.
If you are moving a college kid, it may make more sense to do it as a road trip. Split the driving with your kid.
You pay for gas, one hotel room night, and a one-way flight home for the parent. You don’t pay to ship the kid’s stuff, you don’t pay for a flight to get the kid to school, and you don’t pay to ship the car.
I’ve done many of those between 1,000-1,500 miles (Atlanta to Denver is 1,400 miles fyi). But I like road trips and also the forced together time with my kid.
