Best Csu

We all already know that the CSUs are dumping grounds for all the used up, formerly “elite” undergraduate students. -.-

I really wish the UCs would stop suppressing the CSUs and discontinue the archaic policy of prohibiting them from granting PhDs. There is now a demand for PhDs from unprestigious, mediocre universities that the UCs are not sufficiently filling. California students are forced to look for OOS alternatives such as ASU.

Why do people keep assuming that CSU Long Beach and San Diego State are highly impacted. While they get many applicants, they are not all highly qualified as can be measured by the incoming SAT scores. As I did before, here’s the breakdown.

Average SATs

Cal Poly SLO: 1202

Cal Poly Pomona: 1060

Humboldt: 1043

SDSU: 1037

LBSU: 1025

Sonoma: 1012

SJSU: 1004

CSU Fullerton: 984
.
.
? CSUN: 926

English/ Math Proficiency:

Cal Poly SLO: 87%

Cal Poly Pomona: 53%

SDSU: 53%

Humboldt: 53%

Sonoma: 51%

LBSU: 47%

Cal Poly SLO is the most impacted, followed by Cal Poly Pomona.

Cal Poly SLO

Cal Poly Pomona

San Diego State

Long Beach State

The rest

For Cal Poly, the average SAT is actually 1292, not 1202.

@fremium,

According to who?

Cal Poly SLO average SAT: 1202

<a href=“IR Home - Institutional Research - Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo”>IR Home - Institutional Research - Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo;

@petrarch

ahhhhh…according to 2010 Fall data. :slight_smile: Dude, it is 2011 already, please join us for 2010. ;)

Cal Poly 2010 Freshman Admission Stats:

Average Freshman GPA: 3.90
Average Freshman SAT: 1292
Average Freshman ACT: 29

fermium, what are you quoting stats for students who were accepted to Cal Poly but didn’t enroll? that’s kinda weird.

see page 7: http://www.calpoly.edu/~ipa/publications_reports/cds/cds1011.pdf

P.S. Cal Poly superscores the SAT, the UCs do not.

The stats quoted represent the 2010 accepted freshmen class and the yield was 32.5% for 2010.

Although not every student in this batch enrolled, size-able number of them did.

So not sure what you mean by “stats for students who were accepted to Cal Poly but didn’t enroll”.

@fremium

To be fair, the earlier list was comparing stats of enrolled students and not accepted. All schools would have higher SAT scores for accepted freshmen as opposed to enrolled. After all, if an applicant got accepted to both CSU Long Beach and Standford, it is most likely that he or she would have enrolled in Stanford. As you can see, the stats for admitted freshmen isn’t as relevant for judging the quality of students since many of them are probably not there.

I don’t think SLO has published SAT stats of 2010 enrolled freshmen so for now the 2009 figure still stands.

Cal Poly SLO avg SAT: 1202

cheers!

petrarch… they do. It’s my link above. 1220 is the 25/75 ave. for CR+M.

I am sure that’s close but that’s not how they figure out the official stats since there could be hundreds of 1600s or 400s that are not included in the 25-75 range. They should be out in a couple of weeks. Let’s wait.

It also depends on the major. I want to go for engineering (civil) and only Cal Poly-SLO and Cal Poly-Pomona are ranked in the top 10. Pretty good for both because of the cost. They are comparable to Harvey Mudd and Cooper Union which are pretty expensive since both are private.

[Undergraduate Engineering Specialties: Civil - Best Colleges - Education - US News](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/spec-civil)

FYI - Cooper Union is not expensive because it’s private. It might be expensive because of the living costs in NYC, but the school itself is actually tuition-free. Everyone gets a full scholarship.

This really depends on the major, but I would say overall the best are:

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo

Cal Poly Pomona & San Diego State (TIE)

i see a lot of ppl here are more into sought cali…lets move north a lil :wink: …what u guys really think about Sacramento State? its really popular school up here…

Well, I’d say it would be 1.Cal Poly SLO, 2. San Diego State, and 3. San Jose State (especially electrical engineering and computer science).

heard business is also pretty good at San JoseState

this is an amazing thread, now more than six years long. there is general agreement that overall SLO is the number one CSU, borne out by many statistics. then there is general agreement there is a group of schools sparring for number two, among them the campuses at san diego, long beach, pomona and san jose, all among the larger CSU campuses and all with one or more programs with national notoriety.

remember, though, you should closely examine your MAJOR and not just the school. each of the 23 CSU campuses has multiple programs that are strong.

I found this article today that totally supports why students should seriously look at a CSU.

Check it out: [10 Reasons to Skip the Expensive Colleges on Shine](http://shine.yahoo.com/event/backtoschool/10-reasons-to-skip-the-expensive-colleges-2518407/)

My son is going to Cal Poly SLO and we are thrilled. He had a 4.5 weighted GPA and an ACT of 31. He was fairly typical for an entering freshman engineering student this year. We gladly turned down offers from 5 UC’s including UCLA and UCSD for the reasons set out in the article. I truly appreciate the CSU system and know that he will have a very bright future with a CSU degree. Employers LOVE the hands on experience that you can get at a CSU.

sacramento state for business !
