Best Csu

Thank you, i was along those lines.

Can you break them down a little for me by the ME program and school overall.

What do you recommend?
Thank you!

I searched the thread and saw someone asking about grad-level bio, but what about undergrad level (non-human, not pre-med) biology? HSU is my current first choice but I’ll probably also be applying to CSUMB…what others? Friends have encouraged me to check out Sonoma State and Channel Islands as well.

I’ll be doing general biology but have a keen interest in marine bio.

A fresh new Forbes ranking is out. Here’s how the rank:

Cal Poly SLO

Cal Poly Pomona

San Jose

Maritime

San Diego

Fresno

Long Beach

Chico

Sacramento

Fullerton

Northridge

San Bernardino

San Francisco.

[America’s Best Colleges List](<a href=“Forbes America’s Top Colleges List 2022”>Forbes America’s Top Colleges List 2022)

I am in general agreement with this list. The two Cal Poly’s are consistently on top, however, San Jose beating San Diego and Fresno beating Long Beach are a bit inconsistent with other rankings.

This ranking, unlike US news, ranks all universities together without separating CSUs into the regional category. It is good to see that in this method, CSUs hold their own against universities with better name recognition due to research and athletic budgets. For example, the top CSUs are higher ranked than Pac-12 schools such as U of Arizona, ASU, OSU, WSU, UNLV and many others. It’s good to see how they stack up.

Wow Forbes’ gave my almamater SFSU the last place in CA. >.<

Don’t worry the forbes rankings are garbage

I’ve actually needed a bit of help with this since I’m applying to some CSUs and because they have so many it’s hard to make a decision!
Anyone know which ones are ranked for English, Communications/Journalism, Psychology, and/or Criminology/Criminal Justice? I would prefer one of the top CSUs but unless their programs aren’t as good as elsewhere, maybe not. Thanks! :)

Northridge and San Bernardino beating out San Francisco is inconsistent as well. Other notable omissions are Humboldt and Sonoma which should be in the middle of the pack.

@ barrk123,

I do like the Forbes ranking vs the US news in the fact that it allows us to compare CSUs with other state universities in neighboring states and around the country. It’s good to see that we stack up very well against them, considering CSUs lower marketing and athletic budgets and dwindling state support. The methodology of the Forbes rankings remain a bit suspect though.

I’ve so flustered right now regarding which CSU’s to transfer to as an upper division (I’m also considering UC’s but I already know which ones to choose from).

My major is Electrical engineering and I’m basically applying to CPP, SDSU, SJSU, CSULB. I don’t think I’ll make it for SLO since my CC transferable GPA is only a 3.036… (also would I round up when I put my GPA in the application? e.g. 3.04). How would you guys and gals rank the CSU’s for EE and what do you think my chances are in getting into pomona, etc?

[SJSU Admission](http://info.sjsu.edu/web-dbgen/narr/admission/rec-1046.html) lists SJSU’s thresholds for transfer applicants intending to enter in fall 2012. The GPA thresholds used then:

Computer Engineering: 2.40
Computer Science: 3.20
Electrical Engineering: 2.40
Software Engineering: 2.40

The GPA thresholds may be different for fall 2013 applicants and are not announced until after the admissions cycle, since they are based on the number of applicants relative to the capacity of each major.

i know this isnt a chances thread and its kinda old… but does anyone know if i would have a chance at cal poly kinesiology regular decision?

1270 CR+W
26 ACT
3.85 Unweighted, 4.2 weighted

Here is a link to Cal Poly’s student profile that will give you all the admission stats that you want. [Student Profile - Admissions - Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo](<a href=“Cal Poly Admissions”>Cal Poly Admissions) You are average for your major and will be right in there for regular decision. However, you may not have any advantage over other applicants. Kinesiology, however, is an impacted major. So, if you can get your ACT and SAT scores up it will give you an edge. Do not be too concerned by the word “impacted” though. Most majors at Cal Poly are impacted. Just some more than others. Best of luck! My kid loves it there.

nikkiannpet, CSU Fresno is known for their excellent criminal justice program. They have a working crime lab on campus. My son is a CJ major there and loves it.

What do you think is the best CSU school for biotechnology?

I was thinking Cal Poly Pomona, but Cal Poly SLO and San Diego both seem to be more competitive.

Any insight?

What is the criteria that Forbes uses for their rankings? Putting SFSU last on that list is a complete joke. I would attend there over at least half of the other CSU’s.

This is the 2012 ranking list according to Forbes

162 Cal Poly San Luis Obispo

301 Cal Poly Pomona

315 San Jose State

347 Cal Maritime

355 San Diego State

359 Fresno State

362 Long Beach State

392 Chico State

398 Sacramento State

408 Cal State Fullerton

457 Cal State Northridge

484 CSU San Bernardino

492 San Francisco State

I applied this year to most of the top CSUs. My grades and not that great so I am hoping to at least get into Long Beach. Here’s my list for the top Cal States based on admissions difficulty (SAT scores and GPA)

SAT Scores

Cal Poly 1200s
Cal Poly Pomona 1071
San Diego 1039
Chico 1038
Humboldt 1026
SFSU 1007
SJSU 1000
Fullerton 997
Long Beach 962
CSUN 924

[California State University - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](<a href=“California State University - Wikipedia”>California State University - Wikipedia)

I am applying for engineering so the two Cal Polys would be the best and a reach for me. Long Beach is looking like a decent possibility though I would really like to avoid CSUN.

San Diego state has certainly moved up dramatically. Probably the most quickly rising CSU. A few years ago, it was nowhere as good as the lowest UCs, but its admissions standards have greatly tightened.

1 Cal Poly
2 Cal Poly Pomona
3 SDSU
4 tie of a bunch: Fullerton, Chico, Long Beach, Humboldt, SJSU.
15th tie of a bunch: CSUN, CSULA, CSUDH, CSUEB, Stanislaus, CSUMB, CSUSB

Hi, I have got an offer from CSU, Fresno for CS Program? Will you please suggest me about CSU, Fresno. How good is the CS Program for MS? Your help will be greatly appreciated.

So I just spent an hour reading this entire thread. It spans about 10 years. One thing I’ve seen slowly change is the perception of Cal Poly Pomona. If you go back to the the beginning of this thread, it’s considered one of the lowest ranking CSU’s and only relevant due to it’s “Cal Poly” name. Seems over the last few years (in this thread) it’s picking up credibility and even being ranked ahead of most CSU’s. Can someone explain the shift in this perception? Is it really considered one of the better CSU’s now? Is this a valid shift?

Also, CSULB was consistently ranked in the top 3, but now seems to be lumped in with the lower CSU’s over the last couple years (again, in this thread). What’s the reason for this? Just curious about these shifts in perception over the years and wondering if it’s just exclusive to this thread in this forum or a real change in the value of these two schools.
