Is there a CUNY that is known for Music Performance, and offers Music Education? If there is more then one, is one better then the other? And being in NY, do any of these CUNY’s share faculty with some of the private music schools? Daughter would love to be in NYC paying CUNY tuition with top ranked faculty! And what about on campus housing, in safe areas?

Late reply, but both Queens College and Brooklyn College have thriving music schools with distinguished faculty (that also teach at the area’s private music schools). Queens has on-campus housing (not sure about Brooklyn College), and serious music students (in vocal performance/Opera, for instance, they’ve scored some recent transfers from Juilliard because of the better performance opportunities). You probably already have, but if you haven’t, I would check both places out, contact faculty, and visit. What instrument does your daughter play?

Thanks for replying! Daughter has a couple of years left in HS but is looking. She plays Oboe. We’re in-state so a CUNY school that maybe shares some faculty with the Private schools would be great!

Is she willing to look out of NYC? If so, SUNY Purchase is right outside of the city and they have a great theater program, as do some other SUNY schools.

StringPop is right on point. Go either Brooklyn or Queens. BTW, make sure she has a back-up plan. As a rising Senior who will (most-likely) play oboe for the All-State Orch Ensemble, I can assure you that my passion for the oboe has withered. I used to want to pursue it, but I think I’ll just do it on the side after high school. If she wants to go all the way with it, good for her; just make sure she has a back-up plan in case the opportunities in the tough music world don’t align or she simply loses interest in the oboe. Anyways, go oboe!
