Its pretty much common knowledge that CUNY Baruch is the best CUNY school for business or accounting. What I want to know is what other CUNY schools should I apply to if I dont get into Baruch, and my main choice for major is Accountancy. Thanks for all replies.

I’m pretty sure Hunter College is considered the next prestigious CUNY school. Baruch isn’t really very hard to get into though so you shouldn’t have a problem.

thank you for replying, yea I hear that its pretty easy to get into, but then I see that it only has a 22% acceptance rate (according to college.usnews) as of 2011. But then I also hear that its only that low because all city kids in community colleges apply there because they have a couple free applications after the graduate, so they most of them send one as a shot in the dark. I dont know if thats true, I just heard that.

But I also ask because, I dont have the greatest transcript/resume ever either, I graduated with a 2.7 at my community college, then transferred to SUNY Albany and got a 2.5 in a semester. Im back at my CC right now taking a few classes, to hopefully erase some Fs and get my GPA up. Im also taking an accounting course plus a Business Computing course. Im predicting high B’s or A’s in all my classes.

Another question, if I could get into SUNY Albany, is it reasonable to say I could get into CUNY Baruch? Or is Baruch that much harder to get into? Thanks again for any replies.

And also, I didnt even see Accounting listed on the CUNY application for Hunter, I just assumed that it didnt have one, or it was a liberal arts school only. Then I look on the website and I see it. Now i guess im going to call them and see if i can change it.

I think the 22% acceptance rate is pretty misleading. The reason that number is so low is because of the number of applicants who try for Baruch. Probably just about everyone interested in business in NY is going to apply to Baruch (just my thoughts). I don’t know if Baruch is much harder to get into, but probably a little more demanding in terms of grades. I got in but I won’t be attending. If I was an in-stater, I would probably take the opportunity.

thanks again for the reply, it would really be a gift from god if i could get in, i hope its as realistic as you say it is. Im gonna network as best I can with people at my school and Baruch to try to increase my chances.

by the way, since you got accepted, would you mind telling me your gpa and extracurriculars, and all that resume stuff? You could PM me if you dont wanna post it.

Baruch and Brooklyn college are good choices if you want to study business. the competitive cunys are Baruch, hunter and City college’s selective programs.

Hunter is only good for the sciences/ health professions.

CUNYs only look at your grades. Sometimes its hard to know if you can get into Albany but rejected at baruch or vice versa. You just apply and see if you get in.

Honestly for business, Baruch is much better recognized than any of the other CUNYs particularly for accounting. It started as a school for business when it was spun off from City College. It was the business school of City College. I would strongly recommend Baruch over any other CUNY due to its location and connections. Even if you have to go to a community college, I would still take Baruch over that of Hunter etc.

Also, although it isn’t very difficult to get in, to my knowledge, they do have the toughest admission standards among CUNYs. Check out their average GPA and SATs. The median SATs for verbal was 570 in 2011 and 640 math . They did, however, take kids with lower SATs,which is why these scores are called “median scores.”
See http://collegeapps.about.com/od/sat/a/cuny-sat-scores.htm

Thus, even if you can’t get in as a freshmen, transfer there particularly for accounting and finance.

Baruch is moving on up! A few more years and the average math/reading SAT may well be over a 1300.

Queens and Brooklyn college would be next to Baruch. Honestly I wouldn’t say that Baruch has a good accounting program. It just has more alumni on the street, and its accounting program is much stricter than probably any other one in NY, but the quality of education that you get there is basically what you pay for. (studying by yourself from a text book) The worst thing is a grade deflation for accounting students there. I talked about that to professors, and many told me that they cannot give out a lot of good grades because it would diminish the reputation of Baruch’s accounting program. Thus, in every single upper level accounting class, more than 50% of students will get C+ and lower. For example, I have taken classes where out of 70 people, only 2 got As, 8 people got Bs, and the rest C+ and lower. (that is the story for most of the accounting classes)

In addition, for those who don’t know, there are four accounting classes at Baruch that determine whether you can major in accounting or not, and they are AIS, Cost, Financial I and II. You have to get at lest 2.5 GPA, otherwise you have to switch your major. I heard that eventually they will increase it to 2.7. However, as I mentioned before, more than 50% of students in each class get C+ or lower, which means that most of those students will have to change their major even if they are only a few classes away from graduation. So keep that in mind.
