I am trying to pick at most 4 CUNY and 4 SUNY schools for college. I want to major in the engineering field specifically dealing with Chemical and Computer engineering. I have my private school choices down, but I am confused to what is good for these fields for CUNY and SUNY. So far I have chosen:

SUNY
Alfred State College
State University of NY at Delhi
State University NY at Cobleskill
Stonybrook/Binghamton ----> Not really to sure on these two

CUNY
NYC College of Technology

I don't really know what to choose for CUNY's. Any help would be appreciated :D.

I wouldn’t really recommend any for technology CUNY wise, but have you checked out Polytechnic institute of New York? I would also recommend to look at Stevens institute of technology also if your looking to major in some technology field.

Thanks for the suggestions. So no CUNY’s are good for technology, lol? They aren’t exactly what I am looking to going to just my safety schools if all else fails and I must stay close to home.

Ah damn. Well how about the SUNY’s I listed? I checked on US News Ranking system and they were pretty high for state schools. You have any knowledge on those?

Binghamton is a great school with really good tech and engineering programs so that’s your best bet. Geneseo is nice if you want to take Biology or something in the arts and sciences. I would also check out Buffalo, if your really bright you might also want to look into Cooper Union.

WatRurChances does not seem very knowledgeable about the structure of the SUNY system. There are more than 60 SUNY colleges across NYS but they are organized into categories -there are 10 statutory/land grant colleges (ie certain colleges at Cornell, Alfred U), 4 university centers, 13 university colleges (including Geneseo), 9 technology colleges, and the rest are CC’s and statewide online schools (ie SUNY Empire).

The tech colleges are Delhi, Cobleskill, Maritime, FIT, Morrisville, Canton, Alfred State, Farmingdale and SUNY-IT (Utica) - these provide very directional and job specific majors and often award both associates and bachelors degrees. If you’re looking for a map of their locations, go to suny.edu and click on “vist a campus”. You can also search the SUNY website for specific majors.

Binghamton, Buffalo, Stony Brook and Albany are the university centers of SUNY, with Buffalo being the largest, most comprehensive, and, arguably, most research-intensive and Binghamton being the most selective and highly ranked overall. I would say that Binghamton and Buffao are very good choices for engineering, but competition and courseloads are intense and they are completely unlike the technology colleges you’re asking about. Without knowing your stats and what you’re really looking for in a school (other than proximity to NYC), it’s difficult to know which, if any, of the university centers would be good safeties for you.

Not knowledgeable? You didn’t help him in anyway i didn’t so if you don’t have anything positive or constructive to contribute please do not. We both came to the same conclusion that Binghamton and buffalo would be his/hers best two options.

Well I got a 2080 on the SAT in May. I am retaking it in November to try and get it higher. My weighted average is a 99.82% unweighted. And yeah safety schools would be more likely. My family is willing to pay how much is needed in general. But I am in need for financial aid.

What are your M + CR scores? Do you want a tech college or a university? Your scores and gpa seem like you would be happier at a more rigorous school like Bing, SB, or Buff, but the title of the thread specifies a tech, which is why I made that comment…many kids don’t understand the SUNY structure (heck, most parents don’t either!) and that the different schools may have very different offerings and objectives. I was not criticizing you, WRUC, it was just an observation!

OP, you should probably visit a SUNY tech college and a university…the differences will be very apparent.

*Ah I see thanks. I was looking into private colleges such as MIT, Carnegie, Berkeley, etc. Does that make any difference? *

Berkeley is NOT a private college. And, it won’t give you aid to its cover $50k per year price.

What is your SAT breakdown?

What does that mean about needing aid?? How much will your parents pay each year? You need to ask them to specifically tell you how much they can reasonably pay each year. Financial aid is NOT based on what families think they can pay. The school determines that and it’s often a LOT more than families can afford to pay.

If money is an issue and you really don’t want to go to a SUNY/CUNY, then you should apply to some schools that will give you merit for your stats.
