I am applying to a number of schools to begin in 2013 and I am trying to determine if there is any advantage to applying to a department or school within a particular college. For instance, at UMich, would applying to the Kinesiology department give me a better chance of admission than applying to, say, communications, which is in the art & sciences school?

Thanks!

If you need to apply for a specific major, apply for the one that you are most interested in. Sometimes it can be very hard to move from one major to another or from one college/school to another within the same university.

The answer to your question is … of course … it depends. Let’s look at an example – most would agree that a Female applying to an Engineering (or other STEM) department has an advantage. However, if the transcript shows little aptitude or interest in math and science, then I’d say the candidate is at a serious disadvantage regardless of gender.

happymomof1 gives good advice, apply to the major that most interests you.

(ps – had to look up the word Kinesiology – it’s always nice to learn a new word, thanks!!! and good luck).
