Best dorm at University of South Carolina for incoming freshman daughter??

One more thing, I forgot to mention. On the housing link, that new brochure is 66 pages long with pix, floor plans, etc. It should give you a good idea of the various types of housing.

that helps alot!.. any opinions on bates west? Still waiting to hear back from honors/ capstone, Sims looked nice too

I got accepted EA and I am a male who wants to live in a coed dorm. What dorm is the most fun? Which dorms are the biggest? Are there any suite style options? Also, I am a business major if that means anything.

I would recommend an all-girls dorm: they are more social and open door than the coed ones.

The big difference between sims and wade hampton/McClintock/Patterson is that Sims has bathrooms attached to the room, while the others have hall bathrooms. This is nice, but more expensive, and makes the rooms there tiny. The rooms I have visited in Sims have been amazingly small compared to wade hampton and patterson. Sims also shows a little more age than the others- the carpet turns your feet black, there are problems with mice, and it hasn't been renovated recently.

Patterson is much larger, and has more parties and greeks. It has three elevators, so although I lived on the top floor, it was never a long wait for the elevator. The rooms in patterson are larger than sims but smaller than wade hampton. Patterson and south tower are both ugly buildings from the outside, unlike the other girls dorms, which overlook a courtyard and are historic looking buildings. Patterson has the best closet shelfing, but otherwise is a basic cinderblock dorm.

Patterson and South Tower (and to a lesser extent, sims) are larger dorms, so your daughter will know her floormates, but not everyone in the dorm. South tower also houses sororities- I would only recommend it if she plans to join one. Due to this, it's very loud- I could often hear parties on weeknights from my dorm in patterson. It's known that many residents there never leave for class.

Wade Hampton had a larger room, but the desks are a little small and lack drawers. It always drove me crazy that I couldn't fit both my laptop and a book on the desk at once. The facilities have been more recently replaced, and are in better conditions, although there is peeling paint and dents in the walls.

McClintock I have no idea on- I think they've finished the construction, so it should be livable again- it used to be a mess with construction going on nonstop while the poor students tried to study. All the furtiture is built in, and I think this makes the room seem small.

Capstone requires that she be accepted, and is a co-ed party dorm. Preston requires an application, and is a quirky four year dorm that is very social.

Bates House is tiny and down a very steep hill from almost all classes, as is Bates West. Bates West does have a mini living room, but is expensive.

For co-ed, capstone throws the most parties, and would probably be funnest. Capstone and Columbia are right across the street from the business building (while from bates or bates west to the business building is a long uphill walk).

Can anyone tell me about McClintock dorm? Likes … dislikes? Thanks.

^All girls. Good location because it’s in the Woman’s Quad. About five minute walk from Russel and Humanities. (Believe me, that’s a short distance compared to some places like Bates and West Quad.) Bugs can be a problem.

I had friends there. Some liked it. Others disliked it. I think it was mostly just toleration though.

Also. Please note to anyone who’s reading this. All of the information in this thread is really old and outdated.

Examples:
Maxcy is now the International House. Not the Honors College.
The Honors College has its own building on Sumter St.
Patterson is now the “nicest” dorm on campus. It is suite-style and was recently renovated.
The French House is now in Maxcy. The old French House is now upper Capstone students.
South Tower is now co-ed.

It’s kind of amazing how much has changed in three years. Anyways, thought I would post just in case anyone started reading this thread since its so old.

Sooooo Im in Columbia Hall can anyone give me some info abt living there??

^Suite style. Tall building. Lots of residents. (I think it has around 13 floors.) Mostly freshmen. Famous on campus for being a party dorm. It’s right by the Business Building and Capstone. It’s about a 10-15 minute walk from Russell House. Oh and it’s co-ed.

My U101 class was there first semester. The only negatives I ever heard were from it being a party dorm. Otherwise, most people seemed pretty happy with it. So I’d say it’s probably a decent place for the average USC student.

S will be in Thornwell…music dorm. Anyone have anything to share about it?
