What's the best dorm for a Chemical Engineering major in terms of location and atmosphere? Looking for a place that not super loud for studying (like I've heard the units are) but not completely antisocial.

Also, how easy is it to switch between dorms this late? I'm currently in a Unit 3 Double.

I know a ChemE major who was in Bowles his freshman year and didn’t like it. He was in a Unit 3 triple the second year and was much happier, had a social life, and still managed to get a 4.0.

I’d say stay in Unit 3. You’re basically guaranteed to have a great year and make friends. Finding quiet places to study is no problem considering the number of libraries around. There’s even a library in Unit 3, located below the cafeteria next to the laundry room. I only studied there during finals week and it was still really quiet.

I stayed in a Unit 3 double as a freshman chemical engineer, as did my best friend from high school. We actually found it quite difficult to relate to people there because there were so few engineers around. I don’t think I made a single friend there that I am still in contact with (entering my junior year). It worked out fine for me academically and socially because I was lucky to have a lot of friends from high school that I could do homework with, and my girlfriend (also from high school) also lived at Unit 3. Finding quiet places to study was not an issue.

Foothill is BY FAR the best dorm for chemical engineers because that is where they all are. Living in Unit 3 actually made it quite difficult for me to meet most of my classmates because they spent all their time up at Foothill and hardly any time down on campus or near Unit 3. Because of that, I basically had to wait until my second year to make all my chemical engineering friends. Almost all of my current closest friends lived at Foothill during freshman year.

So I would actually say that I was much LESS social living at Unit 3 as a chemical engineer than I would have been at Foothill. I became much more social during my second year when everyone moved off campus and the Foothill kids branched out to meet new people.

Your freshmen year is not going to be any problem since your classes will be spreading all around the campus. Starting sophmore year, most of your classes will be on north/east, any dorm on normal will save you plenty of walking, but its really expensive, renting an apartment on north side will be better.
