I just got back from ExploreUSC, and they urged us to submit our housing applications. USC is my first choice, so I am most likely going to attend next year, and I would like the best housing possible. Here are some preconditions for me:
-Should have air conditioning; I slept on the floor at ExploreUSC and the heat was killer in the New North dorm, especially at night
-I would very much like a single in a suite style dorm, but it is definitely not something that is a dealbreaker (a nice double would be okay too).
-I would like it to be relatively lively and sociable, but not super party, especially on weeknights

Right now I'm looking most at Parkside, Fluor, Birnkrant, and New North, but I'm open to new suggestions. I most favor the suite style, especially in a single. Any suggestions?

I lived in Birnkrant my freshman year, and I would definitely recommend it. The rooms don’t have air conditioning, which I thought would be a problem (I’m from the humid deep south, lol), but it turned out okay. There was a short period during the fall where the heat was a record high in LA, but other than that no a/c is fine. The other benefits by far outweigh that factor.

I’m not 100% sure about this, but I think you can only get a single in Birnkrant and New/North. I haven’t heard about those being available in other dorms. I don’t think freshman housing has singles in suite-style dorms.

From my and my friends’ experiences, living in a suite generally makes you pretty close to your suitemates but not so much your hallmates. It’s a bit harder to socialize outside of your room (though not impossible by any means). That’s just the nature of the setup. Actual dorm rooms allow you to know your entire floor (and other floors) better. Like I said, I lived in Birnkrant and everyone on my floor knew each other. Most people left their doors open when they’re in the rooms. It’s also a really good mixture of socializing/studying. It never gets too loud, and if it does you can always close your door or just ask people to quiet down if it’s late at night. Birnkrant usually has people who like to party (and do it elsewhere) but are also hardworkers who care a lot about their schoolwork too (especially since the majority consists of scholarship students).

If you have any other questions, let me know. Hope I helped!

I have some personal issues (kinda, I put very clean and pretty neat on my app) so do you thinkI should get a single or a double? My dad favors a suite style living, but Birnkrandt and New North seemed very friendly. How’s the social life at Parkside? I’ve heard great things about it, but some people find it asocial. I’m not that great at making new friends, so a social hall I feel would be a great way to make bonds and friendships with others.

There are singles in the Parkside International suites. These suites house 7 students–3 rooms of doubles plus the 1 single. Not many, so they go crazy fast. If you get in early, you might get one. A/C and all.
