Best Dorm

can anyone give me some insight into the best dorm for freshman. Either co-ed or all girl. Thanks

gymmom2007

from what i've read and been told, it depends on the individual and priorities. all the dorms have different personalities.

sorry i can't help you much

If your student is in honors, then by all means try for Holmes. Holmes is right in the middle of campus & the rooms a suites. Lots of girls like the high rises like Manning. The high rises are a bit farther away but are some of the newer dorms. I just would stay away from the Shoe Box dorms - I haven't looked at them but I hear they are not so nice. Good Luck.

Isn't Holmes only open to a select number of freshman honors students? On the Acceptance of Membership Form, it says that space is limited to 300 students (250/class...so I am assuming upperclassmen choose to stay there also?) But regardless, most of the other dorms, including frosh. dorms, seem pretty nice, esp. if you're not in the ROTC or RISE programs (those are the only people who get "stuck" in the Shoeboxes :))

I would LOVE to live in the Holmes suites my frosh. year but am worried I applied too late (December 2nd :()to get a spot (housing is arranged based on date of application)

I would say give Holmes a shot but have a 2nd choice you would be happy with. Many upper classmen live off campus. You probably have a good chance of getting into Holmes.

Is housing arranged on date of application to Clemson, or on date housing application is submitted? My son applied to Clemson in early fall, but we are still waiting to hear in mid-Feb. Now I'm wondering whether all the students who have already received acceptances would be ahead of him on the dorm list. Anyone know for sure how that works? (My D went to Clemson, but always lived off-campus in apts.)

Housing is arranged based on application of admission, so it says in the housing info. packet you receive about a week after initial acceptance :)

the doors in Holmes close automatically and it's against the rules to prop them open (fire hazard or something) =potential for hampering of social life

My son is a freshman in Holmes and seems very happy with his choice. He has made many friends on his floor (both male & female) and he likes the location (close to Rec center, Union/Dining Hall, Library, most of his classes, etc.) Don't know much about other dorms, except he has been in Shoeboxes and said they are pretty bad.
I seem to remember that last year... if you applyed by Dec 31st, you would have a good chance of getting into Holmes.

That's nice---it would be great if I could go through college w/o ever having to experience the communal bathrooms and such, and suites seem much more personal and comfortable than standard dorms!

The doors close automatically and can't be opened? Wait, as in there's a curfew for Holmes Hall?

The doors can be opened with your "key". They don't want you to open it with your key & then prop it open for others who don't have keys. From a parental perspective, it's a layer of security. From a student perspective it might be seen as a social damper. To my knowledge there is no curfew for Holmes. It's like anything else in life, you learn to live/work with it :-)
