Can anyone give some insight on the best choices as far as freshman dorms, maybe the characteristics of particular dorms?

Are you an incoming freshman or just looking at KU?
My daughter has lived in a scholarship hall (will be a senior in the fall) and has loved the living arrangement and the proximity to campus. Scholarship halls have their own government, their own social system etc. for the 550 students who live in them (50 each in 11 different halls). It is a good way to shrink the size of the campus down.
Are you male or female - I could let you know a little about the different schol halls (they are single sex).
Templin is a nice larger dorm over in the area with all the dorms. It was remodeled several years back and has a suite style set up (4 students - two seperate bedrooms, bathroom in the room, small living room). One floor of Templin is for honor students. Lewis is known as a dorm for kids who are interested in community service. It also has a suite style set up.

Thanks for your information. My son is looking at Kansas, liking it very much after a recent visit. His interests are communications, popular culture, and music (guitar) and wrestling, if that makes a difference as far as dorms go. Suites or regular double rooms are OK. Any further info? Thanks.

My daughter is a communications major. Her advisor is the head of the department - she likes him very much and has been happy with the department in generl (his name is Rodney something).

Daughter's boyfriend just graduated with a music degree and likes the department enough to continue at KU for his masters degree.

I am not sure, but I think Hashinger (not sure if I spelled it correctly) is a dorm that has music practice rooms in it. My younger daughter looked at KU and liked that aspect. Keeps you from having to go all the way across campus to practice (she is a violinist). I am also not sure of how it is set up. I think I remember reading that it was remodeled not long ago.

If he plans to wrestle for KU, I do believe they house the athletes together. They use to house them in Jayhawk Towers, but I don't know if that is still the case.

im going to be a sophmore at KU so i may be able to help u out, hashinger is the music dorm and also considered the hippie dorm by many, templin & lewis are both suite style and oliver and mccoulum are both ur typical collegee dorms

Im gonna be a junior this year and I lived in Mccollum my freshman year and off campus this past year. I would say it depends on what type of dorm setting your son would prefer but I personally suggest Mccollum to anyone looking for a large variety of personalities. Lots of different people, 900+ i believe, and a really fun and interesting experience. If luxurious living is a high priority though, check out lewis or templin.

This is sort of off topic, but can you request your roommate?

Yes, you can request your roommate. You just include the name of your roommate on your housing request form. Your roommate must also include your name on their form.
