What are the best and worst dorms on campus for first year students?

i spoke with a kid thats a freshman at Syracuse who graduated from my school and i was good friends with.

he told me this order rom best-to-worst inn his opinion

Brewster (BEST DINING HALL(Brock dining hall which is shared with Boland), BOOK STORE, PRETTY GOOD ROOMS, ALOT OF FRESHMAN,NICE FITNESS CENTER, STUDY HALL)

Boland

Sadler (Long walk though)

Haven

Dellplain

These are the dorms that are available to regular Freshmans.

Brewster and Boland are right next to eachother and share Brock Dining hall. they have a little of an annoying to class but its pretty worth it.

rest seem to have learning communities, and international students specialization(Day Hall), and etc.

There isalso the new Ernie Davis hall, which is REALLY NICE, but i think its only for upperclassman

kingsta1234, interesting… what do you mean by “they havea little of an annoying toclass”
thanks!

oh my bad lol i forgot to put “walk.”

it has a little of an annoying walk to class

Ok all…freshman do not have a choice of dorms; random placement…

and there are more dorms that are available for freshman to be placed:
In addition to the ones listed (and this may not be all inclusive either):
Lawrinson
Day
Flint

ive heard about that too, which sucks!

are they random with open, split doubles and quads? cause i hate living with 3 othr guys in one cramped room! is annoying!

Yes, they are random…but honestly, we don’t know of any freshman in quads…don’t know if that will change for next year, but I doubt it.

thanks kingstat. it makes sense now.

yeah my brother was in boland i think, you have quite the walk, and especially when everything is snowed in (which is apparently very frequently) since classes are hardly ever or never cancelled

BREWSTER!!! BBB 4 LIFE! i loved it… i just left this year as a freshman and i really recommend it

I’m a current SU Student and will give you my rankings for what it is worth… but really they are all good and you shouldnt be worried about where you get placed. I was in Day Hall as a freshman and thought it was great.

1) Shaw: best location is close to everything/dining hall inside that is open late.
2) Ernie Davis/Haven/Dellplain/etc: ernie davis is gonna be sick next year and I hear that its going to be half freshmen learning communities, its gonna have a dining hall and gym, also haven and dellplain are close to campus
3)Day and Flint: pretty nice dorms that aren’t to far although theres a long stairwell you have to walk everyday.
4)Sadler/Lawrinson: not bad at all just not great i guess.
5) BBB: brewster and boland are pretty far away which is why i wouldnt want to stay there and not in the best location… but they do have nice rooms and dining hall so a lot of people like it.

theres my rankings for what its worth feel free to ask me questions

I’ve spent two years in SU housing, and visited pretty much all of the dorms, so here’s my two cents:
- Brockway (unfortunately only for honors freshmen, but huge lounge, great dining hall, and AC to boot) I guess Ernie Davis would probably fall under this for the same reasons…and the rest of BBB isn’t bad!
- Sadler/Lawrinson–super close to the Dome which is great for games, short walk to most classes, an option to avoid stairs if you so choose, and a bus stop for the mall and warehouse right across the street. good dining hall if you’re veg/vegan, but not so good otherwise.

Personally, having lived in both of these complexes, I think they’re the best–you have a mix of upper and lowerclassmen but it’s mostly freshmen, and the west side of campus is a fair bit quieter at night (i.e., not right next to the frats). I think that’s a positive thing. As for “the Mount”–Day/Flint–you’ll be with almost entirely freshmen, but the halls are huge and there’s not as much camaraderie as in other buildings with smaller freshmen groups. As for the ones on the more central part of campus, you trade a shorter walk for being isolated from 70% of freshmen. I don’t think it’s worth it. Doesn’t mean you should try to get a housing transfer if you’re placed there, but know that you’re going to have to make an effort to connect with fellow freshies, b/c the majority of the upperclassmen who live there are living with pre-existing friends and they’ll ignore you.

I live in Shaw and in my opinion it is less valued now because what made it a good location is now no more since people who owned private property closed the walkway from to campus. Now you have to walk either through the Life sciences building or around the private property. Thank God I am now living on south campus.

If you’re looking to stay on main campus for your second year I’d say Watson!
The trick many students do for a desired dorm is to purposely look up online what dorms the learning communities are in and apply for that learning community. There is not a guarantee that you will get the learning community but chances are that you will. You are not obligated to participate in it however once you get there.

http://lc.syr.edu/

also room type isn’t completely random–you can put a preference (because it’s a change in cost), which isn’t guaranteed but usually if it’s something other than a single it’s honored. some freshmen get singles but not too many…but all the ones i know of who asked for quad suites got them…idk if that helps any; mostly anecdotal!

is Brewster/Boland for Honors students too?

Yes. There is a floor I believe designated for the honor students.

you didn’t even list all the dorms… I’ve heard that Day and Flint are the best dorms.

Heads up, this topic is from 2009. And most people don’t like Day/Flint for the walk. :P

My S was in Day which is mostly freshman. Fairly close to campus, walk down the stairs and you are on the quad. Day and Flint have a nice sense of community, many activities are done as a group. The stairs are killer though, but the kids get used to them.

DD got her dorm assignment and roommate today. Haven Hall.
