Could someone please rate all the dorms?
(food, facilities, location, etc).

I would want a dorm in Central Campus (close to Ross School of Business) with great facilities. Is AC available in Central Campus?

I would want a dorm in Central Campus (close to Ross School of Business) with great facilities. Is AC available in Central Campus?

Haha, I’m bored, so I’ll help you out.
Mary Markley- the location is not very good, as its about a 10 minute walk to central campus. The food is ok, worse than most other dorms but not terrible in its own right (and you get a make-a-pizza station). The social life there is pretty amazing, its all freshmen after all. Of course its hard to get to sleep when there are a lot of drunk people on Saturday morning.

Alice Lloyd- Haven’t heard too much about the dorm; but the location is alright, you still have a fairly long walk to central campus (all dorms on the Hill do). It is fairly tight-knit socially though.

Mosher-Jordan- All I hear about this dorm is how amazing the food i. As for location, same as Alice Lloyd.

Couzens- it was closed this year so I know nothing about it, but since it was recently re-innovated its probably amazing.

Stockwell- the best dorm on the Hill, but I believe it is sophomores+ only.

West Quad- the location is prime, as its attached to the Michigan Union; the rooms are fairly decent, and of course, while the dorm food is only moderately good, you can go to the Union to get food.

South Quad- best rooms on central campus, across the street from the Union, and the dorm food is usually good, but they occasionally have a bad day.

East Quad- this dorm sucks; the rooms are small, the food is disgusting, and the only real good thing about it is the location. You will find all this out at orientation, however.

North Quad- the best of the quads, it has great food, its near BDubs, and it has amazingly huge rooms. HOwever, the chances of getting in as a freshman are pretty much nil.

Bursley- on North Campus, so if you want to do anything fun (besides video games in the Duderstadt) you have to take a 5 minute bus ride. However, the rooms are decent, the food is the best of all dorms, and the community is the most fun (from what I’ve heard). Honestly, most people try to make living on North Campus sound like a nightmare, but it is fine- as long as you don’t mind taking a bus ride to central.

Baits- probably the worst dorm of them all. While the rooms are big and the prices are cheap, there is no dorm food (you have to walk to Bursley for food), the community is non-existent, and if you want to walk to anywhere on North Campus from baits, it will take a little while (not fun when you’re tired/cold). Avoid at all costs, unless your only other choice is commuting from home

Northwood- its great; its a dorm in name only; its really an apartment, so you get huge apartment rooms and a kitchen and private bathrooms. Only problem is, you need to walk to Bursley for dorm food.
The last three dorms are on North Campus, so if 5 minute bus rides aren’t your thing, avoid them.

Wow!
What you wrote is amazing.
Thanks a lot!!

when do you apply for housing and stuff like that?

What dorms have rooms with their own bathrooms? Is it only northwood?

staffmat, you clearly didn’t live on north campus. the bus ride ranges from 10-20 minutes, depending on stops, lights, and traffic. In addition, you could have to wait as much as 10 minutes if you are unlucky for a bus, so it could potentially take a half hour to get to central. for anything. on, and all that is on weekdays. On weekends, buses only run every 20 minutes. getting back up from football games is hell.

The dorms themselves vary. Bursley is an ugly building, but the rooms are actually fairly large, and the dining is second only to the hill. However, the dorm is so huge that the only community that you will have is in your hall…and you might get a terrible hall. My hall is a bunch of lax bro’s whose idea of fun is getting drunk and partying in their dorms till 4 in the morning…EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK. It gets very old.

Baits has large, suite styles rooms, but they are even further from everthing, and have to walk to bursley to eat. Northwood is even worse, although they ARE apartments, albeit really crappy ones. The buildings are spaced out for northwood and baits, so bye bye community! Worst places to live by far.

Central:

Oxford: Few freshman get put here. They are apartment style living, and are faaarrr away from campus, way over in the far end of frat row. They even have their own bus line! same problems as baits and northwood essentially. Living in bursley is pry preferable.

Markley: The worst “real” dorm on central, and the one the most freshman get put into (after bursley). The rooms are the smallest on campus, and it has the longest walk to all the buildings. But that still beats taking a bus to north/oxford. Plus, its all freshman so yaaayyy community.

Couzens: Don’t know much, its been closed. But it should be nice next year since it will be newly renovated. lots of singles apparently.

Lloyd: It’ll be closed for renovations next year. moving on…

Mojo: You won’t live here unless you join one of the residential communities, like hte MRC. It is a very, very nice dorm, extremely well furnished, great study spaces, and the best dining on campus. Rooms are actually on the smallish side, but they are so nice I’d doubt you’d care.

Stockwell: Essentially the same as mojo, but with bigger rooms. Only sophomores though, so no dice for you lot. Best location for the CCRB, and you get the best dining with the hill dining center. It also has the shortest walk of the hill dorms.

East Quad: Great location, especially for education or B school. Worst dining on campus though. The building is kinda dark and dingy, and some rooms don’t have wi-fi (!!!). Living here beats living in markley, oxford, or north campus though, and some freshman are placed here.

North Quad: Arguably the nicest dorm, with classy (though crowded) dining, and awesome, almost apartment-like rooms. Also brand new. But like stockwell, only for sophomores and up.

West Quad: Very pretty building, great food, connected to the union, tied for best location with south quad, decent room sizes. If you are a freshman, pray you get this building.

South Quad: Ugly building, but the biggest rooms on campus, solid dining, and an awesome location, especially for gameday. I think the only freshman who live here normally are honors students though…

Martha Cook: (yes, I’ve been in there ) Very elegent dorm with great rooms and a great location. However, the people I know in there complain about strict rules, especially in regards to visitation policy.

newberry/barbour: no idea, sorry.

^Newberry/Barbour is a lot like martha cook, only without any of the extra rules. Our rules are just the same as the ones for any other dorm. Not quite as elegant but very classy and a lot cleaner and more comfortable than the other dorms. And oddly, the showers are better-- they actually have a little private changing space for each shower stall where you can put your clothes and stuff if you want. Not that big of a deal but I thought it was nifty, and strange that the co-ed dorms didn’t have that and of all places Newberry does. lol. My favorite parts are all the beautiful lounge spaces, we have tons of them and it’s like being in a very nice living room instead of a crappy dorm lounge, and we have an exercise room. And you can’t beat the community. When there are only 100 of you, you get to know each other.

I lived in East Quad last year and didn’t mind it. It’s not any darker or dingier than South Quad and the dining is underrated. I don’t think it’s any worse than anyplace else and there are smaller round tables instead of big benches and it is very common to strike up conversations with whichever random people you end up sitting with, so you meet new people every day all year round-- and since it’s a smaller room you can actually hear each other talk. They serve most of the same staples as everywhere else, and while yes-- there is a lot of ethnic and vegan food, their menu does not deviate NEARLY as much as people make it out. It’s not ideal but it’s certainly nothing to worry about, and it’s not a big deal to walk over to SQ or mojo if you really can’t stand it.

However, I did not have wi-fi. My room was gigantic (14x20), but no wifi. I had about a 50ft ethernet cable and did not care one bit. The only reason I did not come back to EQ is because my *****tastic roommate was going to be living there again and I wanted to avoid her, and I realized I am much more conservative than I realized and prefer a single-sex living environment. The Newberry girls aren’t any more conservative than the co-ed dorm girls so far as I can tell, I’d heard a rumor that they’ll look down on you if you dont go to church on the weekends (from a resident!) and it’s a COMPLETE lie, but it’s just nice to not be running into semi-naked men on my way to the water fountain. EQ is nice but not the environment for me.

Your list should note that West Quad has no elevator, which is super convenient for move-in/out and laundry. And their cafeteria has very limited hours, not unlike Barbour.

^ehh, the lack of elevator isn’t that big a deal besides move in/out, which is only 2 days per year.

As a freshman, be grateful of any dorm on central. I lucked out and got put on central. If you get on central take.

West quad- Where I lived so I am biased here, but think it is the second best dorm on campus. The localization is next to the union and South Quad, and only a 7 minute walk to chem or Dennison, and the angel complex is right across the street. I love the cafeteria. It usually has close to what squad has, but wquad has a burrito bar. And if you want a bigger choice squad is still right across the street. Hours are bad though. As for the community, don’t worry about being the only freshman. On my hall there are 14 freshman and 13 sophomores. Some of the sophomores are less outgoing, but the rest all talk. **Only the lounges have wifi. **

South Quad- same location. Same dinning if you walk across the street, but it is nice to go to breakfast without going outside. Alot of the freshman are in the honors program, but there is a chance of getting if your not. The rooms are the about the same as wquad, maybe a few feet smaller, but still bigger than markley.

Markley - Smaller rooms. I liked the dinning here too, nut I appear to be in the minority. If you want better food, its a walk up to mojo. Abut a 15 minute walk to the diag. Not sure about the buses the, but if your going north, the bus picked up on the backside. Also not sure about the community, but i have heard that it is more of a party dorm but don’t really know.

East quad- Yes they have lots of vegan and different types of food. But they have lots of “normal” food too. Has a great location too. I have heard that its not has social. One kid comes to our hall to hang out because his hall doesn’t do much. I don’t know if that is just his hall or thought equad though.

Oxford- Close to frats is that’s a plus. Don’t know much but kids i talked to from oxford said that they liked it there. I would think better than north camps.

Mojo- ten minute walk to diag. The food really cannot be beat with the hill dinning center in your basement. Have to join a living community, but could be worth it.

Bursly - Some love it some hate it. The food is definitely top 3. Plus lots of other freshman. You get really tight with your hall and the adjacent hall. Terrible location. The buses are pain in the but in the morning, and getting down for games is rough. Make friends on central with futon is you like to party so you don’t have to race to catch the last bus back up to north.

Baits- Not good. Joust not good.

Northwood- They are trying to make sure you on;y get in here if you want an apartment. Some freshman got really unlucky and got stuck here. Probably don;t have to worry about it you don’t want an apartment.

North Quad/couzens/Stockwell/Lloyd Not as a freshman
newberry/barbour/cook/ No idea

People saying that Markley is the worst central campus clearly haven’t lived here. I think Markley is the best for freshman…you’ll meet SO many people so quickly. So what if your rooms are kinda small, there’s definitely enough room and you spend most of your time in other people’s rooms anyways. It also has the first year experience, which holds different events and things, including taking the entire dorm to go see Harry Potter 7 in theaters the night it came out. And the hill is a great place to live, its right in between the hospital, north, and central, and it has the CCRB, and tennis courts right next to it.

Also, Markley has two bus stops right next to it, and the food is really good (make your own pizzas and subs/sandwiches).

Oh, and it takes me under 10 minutes to walk from my room in Markley to the chem building (CC little). You guys need to get fit!

EDIT: Oh yeah, and Markley has 4 elevators, so you don’t have to stand waiting 10 mins for one (south quad).

I am probably going to South Quad (accepted to Honors)!! YAyy!

Haha same here, but isn’t there a chance we might end up on the “Hill”? shudders…

I went to the Hill for my campus day. Wasn’t a long walk, you eat in mosher jordan so the food is good, the rooms were decent as well. Or maybe that was just because of the tour O.o

Campus day location seems to vary for LS&A. I know theres 1 or 2 groups every friday that go to Markley for the campus day meal sometime before noon (knowing this schedule from work at that dining hall).
Thinking about that, someone lurking here probably saw me then hahaha.

which dorms do most of the freshmen live in? i have to do housing in a few days and i was wondering if i should pick the north campus as my number 1 choice. Are there rarely any freshmen on the hill? are they all located in the north campus? i guess im trying to ask…if i want to meet the most kids my age (freshmen)…which campus is the best to be in?

How do this housing process work ? Are you choosing a residence hall first and room type after ? If it is, which selections should a freshmen make in these conditions? Please I need your advice !! I don’t wanna start the university life living in a shi**y place !!!

I am pretty sure you pick your top three room types. I think. Maybe you pick the dorm as well. I forget…

North Campus is pretty much all freshman (at least where you would be if you were a freshman up here)

I’m pretty sure you pick room type and dorm neighborhood ie. hill/central campus, Bursley or other North Campus. You don’t get to pick your actual dorm (unless you go for a live/learn community in which case you’ll be living in the dorm that houses that community. I think Bursley and Markley are both huge and house mostly all freshman.

^I think that’s right

If you want to be around all freshman, say North. Then you can all ***** about the bus together
