:: Best Dorms? ::

hey yall current students which are the best options for freshman housing? preferably coed =) thanks!

All freshman will be in the new Commons starting Fall 08. Housing is assigned by Vandy. You can't specify which hall you want to live in.
See commons.vanderbilt.edu

All of the houses on the Commons are pretty nice (a lot nicer than the old freshman dorms). I currently live in North, where the first and second floors have their own bathrooms, which is great! I'd say that it's pretty much a win-win wherever you end up next year, as all the dorms on Peabody are very well cared for. The only downside will be that long walk over to main campus.

I visited Vanderbilt in April '07 and saw the new Freshman Commons. Fantastic living situation! Actually, the best I've seen anywhere---and believe me, as the youngest child in my family, I've seen most of the top colleges! That is a sweet deal for all of us in the Class of 2012.

Do the new dorms (in the commons) for the class of 2012 have single rooms? How easy is it to get what kind of room you want? Also, are the bathrooms communal or does each dorm room get their own bathroom??

do you get to choose your own roommate?? or is it all random and assigned???

In the past the housing office has honored some requests from folks to be hallmates or roommates. One of D's friends who is also from our town met someone at summer orientation that she wanted to room with and they made a request which was honored. I've read of other circumstances where this has happened. That said, the big move to The Commons is about to change many things and this past practice may be out the window. D has been in some of these dorms to visit friends who are on Peabody and every time the subject comes up she talks about how nice these facilities are. She wanted me to drive back by them last weekend when I was in Nashville, but we were in a hurry to go to the game (which was awesome btw). If you are admitted you will get information on housing in your mailing in late March. If you still have questions, I would suggest calling the housing office. Evidently they are going to have to let 500 seniors off campus to alleviate the housing crunch despite their overriding goal of having an entirely residential campus.

2VU^^^ I hadn't heard that about the seniors. Is that because they are closing an old dorm for renovation? Are there any more new dorms in the works?

Midmo,
Monday's edition of The Hustler has an article on housing on p. 3. D was telling me over the weekend that they are trying to equalize things for the sophomores who may get less than optimal housing (translation 2 years of Kissam Quad) with an extra 1/4 point or something in the lottery. I may have that a little twisted though since in terms of understanding the housing lottery I would be ranked as just plain ignorant!

Thanks, I'll check that. I know nothing about how the housing lottery works, either.
