Best dorms?

If you could choose your dorm after having gotten a feel for them over the past few years, which would you choose? (or how would you rank them?)

bump…? or if there are any stereotypes you’ve heard of?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1062616401-post4.html

That old post is a very good one but do remember that freshmen do not get to pick their dorm with the single exception of Strong, which is all female.

Having said that it is fun to check out the options. The renovated Davidson is very nice but, as a parent fron the outside, I have always thought Cushing was the most interesting looking.

Im am going to be a junior at Vassar this year and have lived in both Lathrop and Raymond. Lathrop is a little dirty and old in appearance but it it is not terrible. I enjoyed Raymond much more because it is a little quieter and cleaner. Davision is really nice and Jewett is vwery good alos; however the rooms are very small. main is separate from the rest od the dorms and as a result dont know many people from there.

I just finished my freshman year at Vassar, I was living in Noyes House.

It has the biggest doubles in the school (along with Jewett, and if you’re lucky, Main).
Since I’m assuming you’re an incoming freshman, you’ll be placed in a double. If you get into any of those three dorms, you’ll be fine, at least room size wise.

Son Just got assigned to Cushing, can someone tell him about it?

S has lived in Cushing for 2 years and will be there again this Sept. It’s kind of far from the quad dorms but close to ACDC (dining hall). It has the best parlors and study areas of all the dorms and S has been very happy there.

Has he made lots of friends form Cushing as well as other dorms? Does the dorm have parties and host events. My son not a big partier but still wants to have an active social life. Thanks for you reply.

It’s kinda a silly question, since most people at Vassar think their dorm is the best one. The whole campus is close enough together that geography isn’t really important (except, maybe, for Main, where you can eat and run errands without going outside). All of the stereotypes about the kinds of people aren’t true - and change every few years anyway. The look and the feel of the dorms are all different, but they are all run the same way, and offer the same things (study breaks, peer leadership, annual parties or other events).

People make lots of friends in their dorms, and friends from outside. Every dorm has parties and events, and every one of those parties is attended by students from other dorms (most attendees will be from other dorms. these are considered “all campus events”). Students into parties will go to parties all over campus, not just in their dorm. Students not into parties will do other things, all over campus.

My dorm friends are still my longest lasting ones after graduation, but that doesn’t mean they are my only friends I stay in contact with - and it doesn’t mean it may be different for someone else. I just happened to form a tight dorm group of friends.

Vassargrad’s reply nails it. S has friends in Cushing and from other houses as well. He’s not a big party-er- chose to live in a quiet hall his first year. Most of the friends he made were in another hall at Cushing-so go figure. Each of the houses hosts at least one campus wide event. Cushing has done Day-Glo Toga for the past few years. S goes to most of the House parties–Seven Deadly Sins etc. There is also study break-usually on Wed nights when there is something going on in one of the parlors and Sunday nights there is A Spot of Tea get together.

I had a lot of concerns when S was getting ready to go to Vassar so ask me any “Mom” questions you have and I’ll try to answer.

I’m living in Jewett when I start in the fall.

I’ve stayed there before for a summer program, it’s really nice.

My brother, class of 2009, told me that if I’m asked for dorm preferences I should without a doubt pick Main because it’s “the center of campus life”. Eventually, as a senior, he lived in a townhouse off campus with friends that he met at main. It seemed nice but his one friend got mugged coming home from an errand on his bike once.

I have heard Jewett and Main, and Cushing is nice too.

Lucky for me, I am in Jewett. :D
