Best Engineering/Creative Writing Colleges

New on CC, so hope I'm posting this where I should be! Love to write, but also very strong in math and science and realize I need to pay rent and eat when I graduate from college, so that's where the engineering comes in. Looking for a school where I could possibly either double major in engineering (biomedical or mechanical are thoughts at this time) and English (creative writing centered) or do an English/Creative Writing minor. Any ideas which schools offer good programs in BOTH areas?

Stanford! But I’m biased :)

Um other schools that come to mind, although I could be dead wrong on some of these:
Michigan?
Northwestern
Rice?
Berkeley
Princeton
Columbia
MIT (I hear it has strong humanities for a tech school)
Harvey Mudd (Claremont Consortium)
Cornell?

A common theme about these schools is that they are not only strong in STEM (science, tech, engineering, math) but other areas in the social sciences and humanities as well.

Some places that might be good in both areas:
Michigan, Johns Hopkins, Cornell
U Texas, Columbia/Barnard
U Washington, U Illinois, U Virginia

I’d also check out: Stanford, Princeton, Northwestern, Carnegie Mellon, Tufts.
And, if you like LACs, Trinity College in Connecticut.

There may be substantial differences, and substantial limitations in many cases, in the extent that you can pursue both these areas, together, at a particular university. In many cases , if you are enrolled in an engineering program, you will be able to take writing classes as free electives, but not major or minor in that area. This will have to be considered individually, and carefully.

MIT, certainly. I mean, Junot Diaz teaches there. The fact that MIT has pinned him down is a testament to how much they care about the humanities.

Wisconsin and Michigan. both have Top 5 creative writing programs and great engineering.

I agree with monydad. Most schools have the College of Engineering separate from the College of Humanities and do not allow you to get a major from both schools. Plus, an engineering degree is a BS and creative writing is a BA and nobody allows you to get a BS and a BA degree with a double major. You would have to complete all the units for 2 full degrees - not worth it. Some schools have started to offer a BS in math or econ so that you can double major in engineering and econ, for example. I know I tried to do this 30 years ago and couldn’t. However, I haven’t heard of any engineering programs allowing a BS in writing. Of course, you can always major in engineering and take a few writing electives so it’s still worth looking at engineering schools that have a strong Creative writing department.

Wisconsin allows a second major in liberal arts.

[Additional Major](http://studentservices.engr.wisc.edu/advising/degrees/additionalmajor.html)

Michigan also offers very flexible double major options for Engineering students at the school of LSA.

I agree with Mudd and MIT, and a little less competitive but still a great school is Rose Hulman.
