You cannot go wrong at any one of them. However, the kind of guidance you need as a major might be more readily available at some of these. How much time will you get with the faculty at Yale or Stanford compared to the faculty at Amherst and Bowdoin? You might have some really good grad student instructors at the former, but you won’t have any poor grad student instructors at the latter. A faculty member at the latter might teach 3+2 or 2+2, whereas the faculty at the former, if they’re teaching 2+2, is teaching at least one graduate course each semester and is spending a lot of energy on their graduate student responsibilities and publications. If you can attend any one of these, I would think seriously about an LAC for undergraduate education in English. I have no significant affiliation with any of these schools, but I am an English professor.
