Best European Schools

Hi everyone,

Since I'm getting my German/EU citizenship (have US now) in a few months, I've started thinking that I may look at some European schools since they're much cheaper than American schools for citizens of EU states. However, I don't know very much about the schools and don't know where I can find much info.

Can someone tell me how European schools compare to US schools on a whole? I've been looking at schools like Heidelberg, Göttingen, and L'école Normale Supérieure de Paris, but I can't really tell how they compare qualitatively to US schools of similar caliber.

Also, what are the best European schools for a language/linguistics major?

Thanks in advance!

Oxford, Cambridge, University of Edinburgh, University of Amsterdam, Humboldt-Universit

prestige- wise, the top unis in europe are:
university of edinburgh, oxford, cambridge, king’s college, imperial college, university college london (UCL)

Even Universities like Heidelberg, La Sarbonne, and ENS Paris wouldn’t be recognized in the US?

I think the US, for all its faults, is recognized as having the top post-secondary education system in the world.

ETH Zurich… One word: Einstein…

They would be, but not by the average person. If you want to work in the US after graduation, you’ll have to prove your education is equivalent to an American one.

If you like politics, check out Sciences Po in France.

Well, I am thinking about working in Europe as an adult, and I’d actually prefer to go to school in the US despite preferring the European way of life, but school here is so expensive that I’m not sure it’s worth it when I could go to a school of equal quality such as Heidelberg for next to nothing.

Something else to consider: if you go to EU for undergrad and want to work in US but run into too many folks ignorant of world class unis outside the US, you can look to grad school in the US, where it won’t be a problem (as academics at least know unis world wide).

For finding EU schools, have a look at some of the general rankings for worldwide universities (based largely on scholarship). I don’t have links handy but google will retrieve 3-4 for you.
