Best Fine Arts Colleges

Hello. My senior daughter is searching for an ARTS SCHOOL, not a college that has an arts department. She wants to be surrounded with art students.

Smaller to mid-size school.
B average.
Drawing and painting major.

Preferrably East coast, north to south.

Where can I find a list of these arts schools? Or can you recommend some?

Already visited Savannah College of Art & Design and New Hampshire Institute of Art.

Thanks,
Cinderellie

do a search in: [Visual Arts and Film Majors - College Confidential](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/visual-arts-film-majors/)

Here’s a list I found. Had a few very talented friends in High School. I remember a few applied to The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and SCAD (Savannah). Most went to SCAD and really enjoyed their experience. First number is tuition and the second number is the percentage of students who stayed for their sophomore year (meaning they enjoyed their experience freshman year enough to stay enrolled).
I highly recommend she look at: VCU, MICA, RISD, Pratt, etc. Let her know to start getting her portfolio in order now. She can take some portfolio developement courses if she needs to add to it before applications. My daughter just finished a development program at Corcoran School of Art in DC (she plans to double major in art and japanese).

I just reread your post and glad to hear you already looked at SCAD. Great school! Good luck!

*Hello. My senior daughter is searching for an ARTS SCHOOL, not a college that has an arts department. She wants to be surrounded with art students.

*

How did she like Savannah?

Be aware that schools that are “art schools” are notoriously bad with financial aid, so expect to pay full freight or close to it. That’s why many opt to go to a university with a great art dept because regular universities can give more aid/scholarships.

If money is an issue at all, be sure to have her apply to a state univ as a back up. Otherwise she could end up with a handful of acceptances in the spring that aren’t affordable…and end up at a CC with no other choices.

If money is no object, then she’ll have lots of choices. :)

Thank you all for your help… especially you, JohnBlack. Great list we are diving into right now.

Mom2… she LOVED SCAD. The city is the campus. It is beautiful. So diverse. Inspiration everywhere. The college has rehabbed old buildings, keeping their integrity architecturally, yet transforming them into new spaces inside for learning or congregating. Yes, I know she will be challenged with financial funding. We’ll go for what we can get. So let the research and visits continue!!!

Thanks again!

I went to SAIC for undergrad (film) and am a current grad student at Pratt (photo). I LOVED SAIC! You come out really well-rounded in terms of theory/criticism and studio art. It really depends on what she wants to do with her career, I think. Pratt and SAIC are, in my experiences as a student at both schools, geared toward the aspiring fine artist - as are Parsons, MICA, and RISD. My friends who’ve attended SCAD, Columbia College Chicago, or SVA were all aiming for careers in commercial art. Of course this isn’t set in stone, and a degree from any of these schools can open doors in many different respects, but I think that’s a good question to ask - I knew I wanted to be a gallery-represented artist, so I tailored my search that way.

A great resource for researching art schools:
The Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design
[AICAD - A Directory of Leading Art & Design Schools](http://www.aicad.org/)

As you are looking at art schools in New England, I encourage you to visit Maine College of Art ([Welcome](http://www.meca.edu)). The small student body of approximately 300 students allows for individual attention from the faculty and staff, the opportunity to be part of a community, connections to a vibrant arts scene in downtown Portland. Students spend the first two years exploring foundations before entering one of the ten majors. The Porteous Building offers 200,000 square feet of academic and studio space. Every student receives a key to the building and has 24/7 access. The average tuition cost after MECA grants and scholarships are applied is $17,000. Additional federal and state grants and scholarships are applied based on eligibility.

Good luck in your search.
