Amherst/William & Mary/Haverford would be good fits for your daughter. Good luck.

Thanks! Great tips about Oberlin. Heard wonderful things about the program there as well. (Glad to “note” that ALL viewpoints are now being considered…referring to the young Repubs!!)
There’s only so much we can glean from research and opinions…ultimately, we must find time to visit these schools. It’s difficult when she’s taking 2 summer school courses, teaching piano, working as a lifeguard, and moving hubby to his new military assignment. But, these posts have helped us parents hopefully guide our daughter to the right part of the country (no pun intended!), the right “fit”, the right school, program, etc. We do intend on visiting Amherst and W and Mary as well as some other Virginia schools. This whole process is daunting…now she’s telling me she wants to be an archeologist…sigh.
The other factor that is weighing heavily is the economics of both the cost of this education as well as the sustainability of a career and availability of a job afterwards. Of course, music and film have always appealed to her (and, I’m sure, many others, as “3” mentioned.) Even if one lives frugally, can one truly “survive” and pay for life’s essentials in these competitive fields? It seems to me to entail quite a bit of luck and timing. Or, perhaps I’m still thinking in line with what my parents told me…get an education to be a doctor, lawyer, or teacher…in other words, “real” jobs.

Consider Brandeis University-no “official” greek system. Music dept is good for a minor or even second major. Close to Boston and student tickets to the BSO.
Wesleyan, University of Chicago and Oberlin all good choices as are Vassar and Bard.

Re post 34: Thanks to initiatives by Harvard, Princeton, and Yale to extend financial aid support to the middle class, admittees from families with family income under $180,000 may find these colleges far and away the most economical college alternative despite their high “sticker price”. Check their websites for details.

I keep thinking Brown

by the way, when i said i hate this place, I meant CC, not tufts.
