Best Fit of Virginia Public Colleges

My son is a junior and we’re starting to look at colleges. Starting with VA public schools because that’s where we live. WE went to look at UVA, JMU, VaTech and William & Mary, also U.of Mary Washington, just to get my son to start focusing and thinking about it. I’m not from VA originally, so I’m having a tough time getting a sense of what the students are like at all the different schools and which would be the best fit for him. Not sure if he can get into UVA or William & Mary based on his grades thus far. He seems to like William & Mary the best, with JMU second. We think he’d do better at a smaller school than VaTech or JMU. He thought UMW was too small. (Personally, I kind of liked it.)

He’s a good student but not at all ambitious or driven. He’s interested in chemistry or maybe political science and wants to continue to play in orchestra. He has friends but is fairly quiet and laid back, not super social, enjoys video games, no interest in sports.

Any guidance appreciated.

I would look at Christopher Newport University also. I have heard good things about it! My dd is at JMU and absolutely loves it - she doesn’t think it seems big at all - the kids find their niche and the school is really great. Good luck with it all!
