Best for CS? RPI, Penn State, Washington

Hi I am a senior, soon to graduate and pick a college. I am majoring in computer science and I was wondering what you guys think the best school for undergrad comp sci out of the schools I was accepted. Don’t worry about cost right now Im broke in all 3 cases:

RPI, Penn State, U washington (seattle) any help appreciated trying to decide best academically for comp sci thx

I believe you have to apply to CS at UW, and it is competitive. Some students are direct admits, but unless that’s the case for you, I’d research that. You wouldn’t want to start there and find out a year in that you could not study CS.

You’d get a great education at any of them. I’d recommend UW (caveat above) and PSU if you are in-state, and finances are going to be an issue. RPI is very good too. Good luck!

Do you have direct admission to CS at Washington? If not, entrance to the CS major is competitive: https://www.cs.washington.edu/academics/ugrad/admissions

Looks like Penn State has a 3.00 college GPA requirement to enter the CS major: https://advising.psu.edu/entrance-major-requirements-college-engineering-2018

If you are “broke”, then net price is probably a significant factor. What net price did each school give you?

@ucbalumnus @TTG Sorry for not mentioning. I believe I was admitted into “Pre-sciences” for washington, no direct admit to CSI. Thanks for the tip. I would like to go to U washington but not being in CSI is a drag. its one of the few things im good at and itd suck if I have to pick another major.

If you’re not direct admit and are really looking to major in CS, that risk is big and I would look at other viable options primarily. As mentioned, money is probably the most important factor here it sounds like. What’s the net cost of RPI and Penn State?
