I'm going to be studying chemical engineering and I was wondering what the best second language to know for this major would be. Is there a certain language that would be most helpful for an engineer to know in addition to english? I'm going to serve in the army before I get an engineering job, so I was considering trying to learn arabic, but would that be usefull for an engineer to know? (it is not crucial that I speak arabic).

I think the best foreign language for a chemE is definitely the chemistry. I mean by the time you complete organic chemistry, it becomes your second language.

Unless you are going to China, then learn Mandarin. If you are moving to European, English is sufficient. No. There isn’t best foreign language for a chemE (why so specific).

Unless you are moving to another country, otherwise English is usually enough as far as in the scientific community.

If you are interested in Natural Gas look Russian would probably be good to know.

The chemical industry in Germany/Switzerland is pretty decent, no? Of course, English would probably suffice there… but you never know.

I would say spanish or portuguese if you plan on doing anything south of the US border. With 3rd world countries moving into their own industrial boom their will be a lot more demand in those countries for manufacturing and processing, a ChemE will do well in places like Brazil (renewable fuels) and Puerto Rico (pharmaceutical), as well as Mexico (general manufacturing).

Seriously? Mathematica or C++ or Java.
