What would be considered the most desirable freshman dorms? Looking for a balance between academics and social life. Thus, looking for quality rooms and social atmosphere, but don't want to be in the all night, every night animal house party dorm. I would be coming from out-of-state, so the opportunity to meet many people would be helpful.

Are you talking for 2010? I’m very confused after browsing your past posts what your situation is.

They change the ones available every year, so it’s hard to know what will be available then.

Yes, I am looking at 2010. You can apply for housing at the same time you submit your application.

Riggo, I believe that you have to be accepted for fall 2010 before you can get to the housing app. Once you receive an ID for PAWS you can check your application status, but the link for the housing app does not show up until you have been admitted. My son submitted his app on June 1, his high school mailed his transcripts on the 16th, his online status said “provisional decision reached” on the 25th and his letter arrived on July 2, BUT the housing app link was activated on the 25th.

1dsnhs:

You are indeed correct! LSU has contradictory information on their website, but it looks like they just changed their policy on June 1 to require admission prior to housing.

Nonetheless, does anyone have any feedback on the best dorms for freshmen?

Blake Hall is nice. The best dorm for freshman right now is probably West Hall, the Business Residential College. You have to be a business major to stay there, however.

Blake hall is awesome. I’ve got to live there over the summer last yr., and it was awesome. The business/engineering dorms are the nicest on campus though. However, you have to be a business/engineer to stay in their dorms. Blake is half ag majors and half traditional housing. A plus for both of these dorms is that they are relatively new.

South Hall for Engineering Majors & West Hall for Business Majors. Broussard for IT. Honors dorms are Laville & Acadian, but I’d probably pick Acadian over Laville. Mind you, this is coming from a mom, so if there if a student out there who has actually lived in any of these, take their word over mine!

Riggo, when you do get to the housing app, be prepared to name a 2nd & 3rd choice. Also, the “pop up” menu for your 2nd & 3rd choices will be limited to the dorms that you are eligible to live in…ie: all male, all female, Science only majors…depending on what you fill in on your Admissions application.

If you’re going for honors, Laville has a good atmosphere. People are friendly and looking to meet new people, but the partying is a lot quieter and less prevalent than at a dorm like McVoy. Acadian as well, but I prefer Laville.

Stay away from anything in the Pentagon I’d say. The location is less desirable, especially if the dining hall there continues to stay closed.

They just opened up Evangeline to both sexes this year. I never went in there, but I hear the rooms are fairly nice. Probably will be loud, etc. though.

Blake is the nicest without a doubt (if you include lobbies), but you never know who is eligible to live there in 2010.

What can you tell me about Evangeline Hall which will house the Basic Sciences Residential College.

As a Chemistry major, that is an option for me.

Thanks for any help.

Evangeline Hall:

It used to be an all girls dorm, so they have hall baths. Hall baths get cleaned two times a day, everyday. The rooms can house two to three people, and the rooms are quite spacious. There’s no carpeting in the dorm rooms; however, you do have you own sink. I think in Evangeline they have real closets, but I’m not too sure. Overall Evangeline is a pretty decent dorm, even though it’s older than Blake Hall and the Engineering dorm.

They’ll probably also have some of your classes scheduled within the dorm as well.

Hi: curious as to which dorms have suite or private baths available. My other daughter is at UT in San Jacinto and my youngest may want the same thing if possible at LSU. The school website seems unclear as to which dorms. Previous tours of Laval house, tho nice, had only hall baths.

Any word on the newly renovated dorm?

Thanks

Dorms with Private baths:
*Most RAs of dorms have their own private bath.

Dorms with Suite Baths:
Annie Boyd (Mainly an upperclassman dorm)
Highland Hall (Mainly an upperclassman dorm)
Blake Hall (The Non-Ag College Wing)
South Hall (Opened only to Engineering majors)
West Hall (Opened only to Business majors)

hall vs suite baths are really not a big deal, and that’s saying a lot coming from me

Thisdude415- Hall vs. Suite baths is a huge deal for girls. Guys don’t necessarily care.

The Engineering Residential College/Business Residential College are the nicest and newest dorms on campus in my opion. It is also a very nice place to meet friends who will be your study buddies since everyone is either an engineering or business major. The only bad thing is that there are only a limited number of spots. But it is definately the place to stay your first year if you are an engineering or business major. Some of you may know it as South/West hall.

DS completed his housing app 2 weeks ago with South Hall as his first choice for Fall 2010. Do you think he’ll get in or will they move on to his 2nd/3rd choice?

1dsnhs- Because he requested to live in a residential college and he applied early, he should be able to get into South Hall.

Let me ask a hypothetical, but reasonable possibility since we are 14 months away from the Fall 2010. Let’s say you choose a residential college, but have a change of heart on your desired major over the next 14 months. Let’s say you choose to be in the basic sciences residential college, but later on choose to be a business major. What are your options at that point? How hard is it to change majors between now and the start of the year?
