Hi,
Just got accepted today!

I was wondering what the best freshmen dorms are...

Also, if by chance you know, where can I play hockey (Intramurals? Club? etc.)?

i second the dorm question. i'm OOS, so i'm not too familiar with the general layout as some IS students might be. any tips are welcome!

Well, a lot of freshmen prefer Markley -- not because of the actual dorms, but because of the social qualities. It's nearly all freshmen so it's a good place to meet people.

there have been many dorm questions on this forum.. if you search you should be able to find more extensive info, but I have a basic understanding. Central campus is where most classes are located, along with downtown. South and West Quad have the best location I think, but you'll be living with a lot of other students. MoJo (Mosher Jordan) is on Hill, which is a small distance away from central campus, and it was renovated very recently so it has air conditioning all year long and wireless internet, but it holds less students so you have a smaller chance of living there. A lot of Freshmen are forced to live on north campus, which I've heard is a drag because they have to take busses so they have to wake up earlier and can't stay out as late because busses stop running.

I hope this helps! I'm not sure where i'll request to live yet, though; i'll have to talk more to some friends about their experiences at different dorms.

I'm part of the class of 2012. So rather than speculating, here's the deal. West/South Quad are the best in terms of location because you are right off of State St., but there's nothing going on in those dorms. The halls are very quiet and quite frankly you're not going to get the true freshman experience there. But, the dorms are significantly larger in West/South Quad. Some of them even have sinks, which is a nice perk (trust me!).

MoJo and Markley are both on the Hill. The Hill isn't a bad location. It's right near the USB, Dennison, West Hall, UGLY, etc. Yes, MoJo was renovated which is great, but air conditioning is not that big of a deal. It gets cold in Michigan fairly early in the year. Some people say MoJo has the best food since the dinning hall is new, but I disagree. Pretty much all of the dorms have the same quality food. MoJo just has a bigger, nicer looking dinning hall.

Also, Markley has wireless as well.

IM hockey got cut a few years ago. Something to do with costs and too many fights, I think.

Club hockey website is here University of Michigan Men's Hockey Club

There's also an Ann Arbor men's league run out of Vets/Buhr Park that a decent amount of college kids play in.

what's "the true freshman experience"? i don't see anything wrong with a hall being quiet. also, i didn't really speculate very much... just gave these guys a basic summary of campus

In terms of location, South Quad and West Quad are the best but its mostly upperclassmen. The Hill has a good mix of freshmen and upperclassmen and I personally think that's the best place to stay. MoJo was recently renovated and Stockwell will reopen next year after extensive renovation. North Campus is not very good but unfortunately a lot of freshmen get placed there. If you're in Bursley, its alright because its the biggest dorm so you get to meet a lot of people but Baits is not even one building; its a number of buildings spaced apart so there's no proper sense of community.

ima freshman livin in west quad and, honestly i love it here...i leave like 5 minutes before class starts and stuff and i make it on time....however, mojo is excellent..and out of experience, they do have the best food and stuff...like id rather live there...but west quad/south quad is really good and lukky as well...and i heard markley sux! ....but then agen, it's all freshman so its gotta b fun (u CANT study there at all) ...hope this helps
(oh, and west quad's the only dinin hall tht has burritos :) )

can you guys tell me where you live and how you like it?

I stay in Bursley. I have a single room and love that fact but hate that I have to take the bus everywhere. There's nothing to do on North Campus so its a pain. But the majority are freshmen and being stuck so far away creates a greater sense of community so its good that way.

I'm a freshman living in MoJo. I can't complain; it's a nice dorm. One thing other people aren't mentioning, though, is that we have hard wood floors in our rooms. I think most dorms have those ceramic tiles. All of the furniture is brand new and the AC is extremely useful. The other day it was like 30 degrees outside and I had the window open with the heater set to 85 and I felt perfect. Also, the bathrooms are much nicer than the East Quad bathrooms. Each shower has it's own seperate floor so that it's not like one big shower sectioned off into cubicles that share a couple drains in the middle.

My advice to you:

Join the MRC (Michigan Research Community). You're guaranteed to live in MoJo and it looks great on your resume. It really has no effect on you after about 2 weeks of school. The only requirements are an easy twice a month pass/fail 1 credit class and that you take up some research. This can be anywhere from biomed research to computer programming (you get a ~500 page book of projects to pick froom).

Anyway, congratulations on getting accepted.

so markley is a party dorm?
and the Hill is the all-around best place for freshmen?

ooh that sounds interesting. Couple Q's.
-How do I join MRC?
-MoJo has 2ppl rooms?
-Bathrooms are shared?

Yes, Markley is the party dorm. Yes, the Hill is a solid location for freshmen. Yes, MoJo has doubles. Yes, the bathrooms are communal. I don't know any freshman who has his or her own bathroom.

What is my chance of getting a dorm in MoJo or Markley and how/when do I register for one?

MoJo's on the hill right? how's their price compared to the rest of the campus?

I just got accepted to School of Art and Design, but i want to live on central campus, with students outside of the art program. Is this going to be a problem if i have big art projects i need to work on? Does the art school provide space to do these?

I am going to be in the Air Force ROTC. Which housing area will put me closest to North Hall where the ROTC building is? Also, on the housing application, will I rank according to area (Central, Hill, Nort) or specific bulding?

Are their any living/learning communities at Markley? Or anywhere else on central campus?
I only know about the Community Scholars Program at Cousins...
