Best from each section

I think for the past few years, princeton is the only ivy that takes the best sitting instead of the best scores from each section of the SAT. Has the policy changed yet? I'm worried because I got 680, 780, and 670 on the CR section on 3 respective tests. I retook a second time to get a higher mark on another section, but the CR fell because I wasn't paying much attention to it. Will this be a problem?

Nope! I've heard they start averaging after the third time, but that doesn't seem to affect you.

I thought that Princeton took the best of each section!
My first time taking the SAT I got 800 writing, 800 CR, and 650 math...so 2250, and then the second time I got 770 writing, 690 CR (I...don't know what happened there, 690 math...so 2150. They will obviously take my 2250 as my best-sitting then, but that math score is so low. I wish they could just jumble them up so I could pull off a 2290 even though I know 40 points probably won't make that big of a difference.

j07, you have fine scores, you dont need to retake them! :)

Honestly, I believe that once you hit 2100, SATs cease to matter much. If you're not a good applicant for the class, then a 2300 wont get you in over a 2100.

i was informed that they take the best of each section too.

i hope you're right BD89

Yeah, I can agree with that. My friend got accepted to Princeton ED with a 2140 and OK SAT IIs and our other friend was deferred from Harvard SCEA with a 2380 and triple 800s on subject tests. So...I get it.

A lot of people have been telling me, however, that a 650 (or 690) in math is just plain not competitive enough for Princeton. And I get that. But then again, my GC claims that becuase I'm Hispanic I get "SAT forgiveness." I am unsure of the validity of that opinion and additionally what on earth she is talking about.

j07, dont let anyone tell you anything. A 650 is fine, especially since you have not one, but two! 800s. You're completely fine. In your mind, you have to know that you're competitive for Princeton, and if you dont get in, it wont be because you werent qualified. It will be a result of a very fickle admissions process.

So if anyone was telling me that I wasnt competitive enough for Princeton, I'd tell them something that I cant say on the forum. :D

Ok...I'd be nicer, but I would not put any stock in what other people say-especially when they belittle you.

"SAT forgiveness"- i doubt that exists...i am an a low-income immigrant w/ a 650 M 680 V 800 W (best scores). there are too many minority applicants who have diversity and near perfect scores, so sorry, we just have to accept our too-crappy-for-Princeton-ED stats. JK, i don't think that stats make the applicant :)

haha BD89, so right, peeps at my school seam to look down on anyone who thinks they can do better than UVA of W & M. thanks for the confidence boost :)

ak, you're scores are pretty good as well. I think it would have been better to have 7s in all subjects, rather than an 8 and 2 6s in the others. But who are we kidding? A 2130 is a perfectly great score, and it will certainly not hamper your getting in. People think stats matter so so much, but in reality, and especially at a place like Princeton, they cease to matter much. Once you reach the threshhold, (and I dont know exactly what that is) they start looking at other stuff. If you dont have the character that Princeton looks for, then even a 2400 and multiple 800s wont get you in.

...........:)

Princeton does take the best from each section. My "no" was answering Dionysius' questions. so j07, take your best scores and relax :).

I don't really understand how they "take" your best three scores. Don't they see all your scores anyway? How is it possible to "ignore" the lower scores from past testing sessions?

what about 640 on CR?
i am on the verge of bursting my head over whether i should retake it in january... i have overall 2160 (that is when all best sections are combined from two test dates) = CR 640 M790 W730
i was deferred and so i am kinda thinking that it was my SAT scores...

what do you think? if i get at least 700 on CR, would that change anything?

would appreciate comments, thanks!

yeah, i thought that my scores were the weakest part of my app...i was pretty confident in everything else so i took deferral really hard...but now i really do agree that one you're over ~2100, i mean in range, that adcom starts to focus on other stuff more seriously, and thats the part that hurts....

I wouldn't retake it.....

thykingdomcome - i think they just take the best scores to make things easier for them, otherwise in the end, they would just have too many numbers to look at. I mean, some people take the test four or five times and sometimes there are scores differences of a couple hundred points. I think the reasoning is that if you are able to attain your highest score, then that represents as close to your max potential as possible.

THEY TAKE THE AVERAGE? I've already taken it twice and I'm in ninth grade! Should I not take it again?

Don't worry about it SaveD. They will only count the SATs you've taken in your junior and senior years unless you specify otherwise.

So should I keep taking them for practice?

No...don't waste your money. There are more important parts of your application than the SAT's. When you're a Junior, start working on it again. You'll do much better anyway.
