Best Frosh Math classes?

For incoming frosh, how does Math placement work?

Current students, what frosh advanced math classes have you particualry enjoyed? Any math classes to be avoided?

For the kids on my D’s dorm floor (she just finished her Frosh year), the solution to the best Frosh math class was this: Don’t take math. :)

I know that’s not very helpful but I couldn’t resist. No one else responded to your question. But I’m serious about the solution. It works, unless you’re a math or science major.

Plenty of Obies taking math and science… D took Discrete Math first semester, Calc 2 second semester–she had one semester’s AP credit, so didn’t take placement exam. Both classes were good. I believe placement exams are offered during orientation.

Well, if your D has a high AP score for a math subject, she could place out that way. Otherwise, there are placement tests for math during orientation. The test times would be in the orientation schedule booklet.

My S got a 5 in his AP Calc BC test so could have gone on to multivariable but opted to retake Calc II because he wanted to “conquer sequences and series once and for all”. He liked it a lot and wasn’t bored…but then in the second semester he took statistics and didn’t like it at all. Though he wasn’t the only one having a hard time understanding it, there were others that just “got it.”
