Ben: Is building your own curriculum a possibility? I have all kinds of suggestions for that, but none for umbrella schools or distance schools.

Overall, the best programs are ones that best fit the child that is being taught. So my child heading for a liberal arts degree (non math/science) who loved to read long books had a different education than my youngest who is heading towards an engineering degree. That is the best thing about homeschooling-tailoring the education to the child.

Those of us who do it alone have very good records of college acceptances if that is what we are aiming for. On my various homeschool lists, I know of kids who have been accepted to all the top ranked schools and top ranked programs. Now of course those kids were hard working kids since getting into a prominent program isn’t a cake walk for anyone.
