Going over mid-march to visit!

Which hotel is decently close to Harvard (accessible by public transportation) but also very inexpensive?

Thanks!

Thanks Byerly!

I've already done research on actual prices of nearby hotels but was hoping for personal recs from people on CC who felt the establishment they chose was good. Any suggestions? :)

Nobody ever knows what somebody else means by "very inexpensive" or "decently close."

25 dollars a night :) or cheaper :)

^ Haha and preferably without cockroaches.

"The Inn at Harvard" is close to campus and worth the money! It ranges (depending on time of year) from $119 - 179/night. Their bed is more comfortable than mine at home, and it is literally across the street from some parts of the campus, e.g, Lamont Library.

There are no really inexpensive hotels near Harvard The Harvard Sq

sorry, I also meant to add, the least expensive one near Harvard is the Harvard Square Hotel.

I remember reading about The Hotel at MIT. I'm not sure if it is any good though. When I visited, all the hotels there were cheap (it was the off season-no one visits Boston in December!)

That is incorrect. December can be one of the most difficult times to find a hotel room.

there is a greatly priced radison in Woburn, MA; it's not too close, but not too far; you'd find yourself at Harvard in 20 minutes from there; they have great service and it's really nice!

Do the "name your own price" @ priceline.com. You can specify Cambridge as your location. I'd try 4 star hotels first, and then 3 stars, bidding as much as you're willing to pay. I know I've got a 3 star for around $40 a night (it ended up being the Cambridge Hyatt, which was very nice), but that might be unusual. Let me know how it goes.

Well, I went in December and the rooms weren't that expensive. I don't remember the name of the hotel I stayed at, or the cost of the hotel. I suppose I have no data to back up what I said and anecdotes aren't worth much anyways. Still, I felt that the prices were low. It doesn't matter what I say anyways because you can find more up to date information from a variety of sources. Good luck.

Very inexpensive = Youth hostel. Don't know if you would prefer a real hotel, but this was fine for sleeping purposes. $32 per night. http://www.hihostels.com/performAffiliateLocationSearchHome.do;jsessionid=77546572b54441daa6959945815d0d68?city=a60002

Will you have a car? Woburn is 20 minutes away only in your dreams and is not on public transportation. The Hyatt is also inconvenient, although it is close as the crow flies, but too far to walk and not on the T.
Are you asking, what is cheap, or what is good? Becuase what is good in Harvard Square is the Charles Hotel and the Inn at Harvard. The Harvard Square Hotel is like a glorified motel, but right in the square.
I agree you should try priceline to see what you get, but keep in mind the cost of cabs and/or parking. There is NO parking in Harvard Square except in pricey lots and garages. ALso, your parking, if you have a car, will not be included in the price of your hotel.

You know, for some reason I hadn't considered youth hostels. This makes a great deal of sense so me seeing as how I plan to backpack in Europe in the summer living solely in hostels. It would be a nice way to try out the hostel scene and see if I like it. Thanks, tkm, and everyone else for the great suggestions!

Hyatt has a free shuttle. Taxi is around $10. That's not quite Inn at Harvard, but I think it's really accessible.

Also, if you're a student, think about contacting the admissions office (or someone here on CC!) and asking to spend the night in a dorm. Probably a better experience than a hotel, and free!

Hostel scene in the US is probably very different than the hostel scene in Europe... but I'm just guessing.

spikemom, how far away would you say Woburn is? It always seemed pretty close when I visited, but then again...I was busy staring around...

Woburn is a 30-40 minute drive to Cambridge. In rush hour, could be up to an hour.If you wanted to stay in a suburban strip mall type hotel, there are closer ones. There is a Days Inn in Allston, for instance. It's across the river from Cambridge but it's a real hike and not well connected by public transportation. - but way closer than Woburn. And I bet that Radisson still isn;t within OP's budget.
