DS3 was just accepted to Tufts and we (and he) are so so excited! DS2 is at Harvard, so we are very familiar with staying in Harvard Square, but was wondering if there might be a hotel a little closer to Tufts for the April Admitted Students visit. I'd like DS3 to get a feel for the Tufts area. Will stay in Harvard Square if that is best option, but just wanted to check and see if anyone has any advice. Thanks!

Congratulations! We usually try to stay at the Hyatt Medford. We have also stayed at the Holiday Inn in Sommerville but weren’t crazy bout the immediate area. We’ve also stayed at the Best Western Plus in Arlington and liked it. All three are fairly close to Tufts.

Are those three walking distance to Tufts ? If not, is there public trans to Tufts? Do you recommend renting a car if coming from too far to drive?

I stayed at Hyatt last Aug for 2 days. it’s about 1.5 mils to Tufts. The hotel provided free shuttle to anywhere within ~2 miles. I did not have a rental car. So my son and I took the shuttle to Tufts, Target for shopping, Davis Square. You just call the hotel when you need them to pick you up on the way back, usually you have to wait 30 mins. The complementary breakfast was really good. I got good price, $158 per night. We met about 20 Tufts student’s families in the hotel.

There are no hotels within walking distance to the school. I’ve gotten some great deals via Priceline’s Name Your Own Price. I’d recommend a car.

Target is in Everett. There are Costco, B&B, Target, office max, Old Navy etc in the shopping plaza. Everytime when we took the shuttle to go around, there were other 3-4 Tufts families, usually mom with kid.

1.5 miles is not far, about 30 min walking. But I am not sure if the road is OK for walking. I do not remember there is freeway between Hyatt and Tufts. I am not familiar with the area, so I cannot comment on it.

I also came across a hostel in the boston theater district for $50. anyone know anything about this area? safe enough for an adult man (prospie d wd be sleeping on campus)

what is the stop to get to Tufts from public trans? what kind of trans would be used from the theater district, bus , train? About how long might it take to get from the theater district to Tufts?

There is no free way between the Hyatt and Tufts and there are traffic lights in all intersections. It is a little trafficky around the hotel but after that is not bad. It is about a 30min walk though. Also from Hyatt you could walk to Medford square were there are some restaurants, coffee shops etc. Not spectacular but something to do. The closest shopping areas are the Everett mall (as mentioned) which has Target and Office Max and Sommerville Assembly square mall which has K-Mart and Staples. Both malls also have Bed and Bath. There is also bus 96 that goes from Medford square to Tufts (then to Harvard via Davis square).

We found a great house through Airbnb within a 10 minute walk to Tufts. Right across from Mystic River to Medford Square and the Main Street with stores. Nice, residential neighborhood. In the fall it was a lot less than hotel rooms. A bus ride or walk to Davis Square. There’s also a pool in back! PM me if you want details.
