Best house?

With the help of others, I think I found out which house I'm in, what do you guys think about Grays?

Grays is reputed to have some of the biggest and nicest dorms out of all the freshman houses.

[quote]
Its rooms are so spacious that the building and its reputation for housing the sons and daughters of the rich, famous, and royal has earned it the nickname "Harvard Hilton."

Sounds like a good dorm to me :)

Plus, it's right next to Harvard Yard and Harvard Square.

hmm, since i may be in Canaday, I really hope that Canaday is the best!!!

nvm, i just did some research and apparently Canaday is also known as "The Projects"...

how'd you guys find out your dorm?

Hmmm, I've been told of some tips on how to find out your room, b/c what you can do is at your my.harvard you click the tab for campus resources, then under student term bill click "View latest changes and payments under your account." Then you'll get your account summary and on the left hand margin click the link for addresses, which should give you your phone number which you can then look up through google [try it w/o the area code first] to get a name and then you look through facebook for that person's room, and if all this worked for me then I'm in Grays E21. Hmmm, and this agrees with the fact that on my FAS Registrar Student Record it says I'm in the Crimson Yard, so...

i'm at harvard for the summer and here are my opinions about the dorms. i've only been in a couple so yeah.

canaday: the worst! cramped... tiny... in the summer, it's given to the poor younger kids who are rising juniors since they ahve nowhere else to stick them.

holworthy: quite nice.. it has a common room and then two rooms w/ bunk beds... the sleeping rooms are quite small/squished. you have one bathroom for the four ppl in the room which is nice.

stoughton: basically one room for 2 ppl... no common room or anything really. it's spacious but not really good if you want to sleep while someone's doing work. community bathrooms each floor. 2 stalls for up to 8 ppl. it's good if you're claustrophic and don't like cramped areas.

matthews: i think this one is pretty nice. each suite consists of a common room and then individual sleeping rooms which are once again small but at least no bunk beds. closet is quite small too i think. community bathrooms as well.

i haven't been in any other dorms but if i do, i'll post here.

Woot! I'm in Stoughton :) -- the lack of a common room isn't that big of a deal for me because the room is so spacious.

As a former Canaday-ian myself, I found it to be the most convenient on campus. When there were snow storms and your friends over in Pennypacker, Grays, Wigglesworth, etc. had to trek at least ten minutes in the deep snow, Canaday-ians found themselves inside Annenberg in less than five minutes. Not to mention everything is FREAKIN' CLOSE - from Annenberg to all your classes, etc.

Oh, did I also mention virtually everyone has singles within their suite AND a common room? I got to enjoy that, while my friends in Straus had to endure with four person suites with double bedrooms.

thanks tonyt! unfortunately my phone number seems to be very popular in san jose and maryland as a hotline ambulance number or something.. hahaha :) the only person i could find at harvard with my # doesn't have facebook! i guess i'll just find out the old fashioned way.

what about weld?

Straus is clearly the best, although my proctor is now living in Lionel, so those of you assigned there are pretty lucky too.

TonyT-FYI, At Harvard "house" refers to an upperclass dorm (i.e. Adams, Lowell, etc.), while "dorm" refers to a freshman dorm.

Grays is pretty awesome, although I don't think there are singles? I lived in Wigg and loved it, except being on the third floor means slanted ceilings, which sort of sucks. Agree with sunglasses about lack of dorm unity.

well, then, xjayz!! i'm not as upset about Canaday anymore...

weld is very nice. It has an elevator! quite the perk. Suite style rooms many (maybe all) have bathrooms

That is a really brilliant idea Tonyt88...using that method, I am in Pennypacker, theoretically. However, for me, this contradicts what is listed on my FAS Registrar Student Record. It says I am in Ivy Yard and Pennypacker is not part of Ivy Yard. So who knows...I guess I'll just have to wait another long week. My guess, however, would be that the phone number method might not be foolproof if phone numbers are changed year to year for privacy purposes...

I heard Wigg was really bad mainly b/c it's right next to Mass. Ave. and it's sooo loud in the night. There are always sirens! It's also called the "Sound Barrier"

Yeah, it's not foolproof, unfortunately :(, but yeah, it's just how the yahoo group is coping with the long wait for our roomates which appears to be taking forever, but oh well, they'll come soon enough.

Wiggs is not bad. It has a lot of character--it's very classic old Harvard--and it's close to the Square, which is so, so nice. The lack of entryway unity can suck, but the location is not a problem--all the cool kids in Wiggs eat in upperclass houses!

PS We don't call freshman accomodations Houses, we call them dorms. : -)
