Best Housing Fit for Me?

Hello everyone,

I'm a fairly big CC viewer but never have felt the need to post before. I want to get a jump start on housing by knowing where I want to sign up before the form actually comes out. I suppose it would be best to speak about myself as a person in order to narrow it down; however, I have a rough outline of several places already.

I'm a bit shy but never antisocial so big party dorms are way too rambunctious for me. Yet, as a WCAS student, I pretty much need to live on South Campus (plus being near Evanston doesn't hurt). I want a place that has social people but all the while has its quiet times for studying, sleeping, etc.

So far, I've narrowed it down to 1835 Hinman, perhaps the North or South Quads, maybe Willard? To be frank, I'm not really sure what's best for me, and yes, I have used the N by NW Student Guide. I simply want insight, suggestions, and in general, help!

Out of those choices, 1835 and Willard are probably the most social, but I hear from friends who live there that it can get pretty noisy at night. 1835 though has a terrible location; although its close to the south campus academic buildings, its far from everything else. Willard is a very nice dorm, but I hear there’s a clique mentality associated with it.

I’m living in SMQ right now and its really not as bad as I thought it might be. The facilities are subpar and the rooms are pretty small, but the location is excellent; you’re equidistant from 4 dining halls and 1835 isn’t too much further off, downtown evanston is just a stone’s throw away, and south campus buildings and the library are just a few minutes off. Its a pretty small dorm, so you get to know the people pretty well. About half of the people here are sophomores, many of whom never leave their rooms, but from my experience, the freshmen are pretty social and like to hang out. NMQ I imagine is exactly the same.

Anyhow, GL with whatever you pick

Tinfoyl, my son is in Allison this year as a freshman. Sounds like it has everything you are looking for, as well.

I’m not quite sure Allison is for me, but I am curious about the bathroom situations for the dorms (primarily those on South Campus). Do any of the dorms have a more private style bathroom system or even bathrooms shared by less people? I know some of the dorms have a suite system, but how exactly does that work?

I’m looking for the exact same thing as tinfoyl! Also in need o some advice…

You might also want to look into CRC and ISRC. These dorms have the suite system. How that works is that 5 or so rooms (usually a mix of doubles and singles) share a lounge area consisting of a table and chairs and some couches and lamps. It’s not like these suites are “separate” from each other, though. There are doors that can be closed between the suites, but most of them are left propped open all the time. The hallways of the dorms go through the lounge areas, so it’s not like the suite is private for the rooms that share it. It’s a great system, though. People often go and hang out in other suites, and it’s fun.

As for bathrooms, CRC and ISRC each have 10 bathrooms, I believe. There are roughly 100 people in each dorm. So about 10 people share a bathroom, which isn’t too bad.

In ISRC it may work out to even fewer, since the suites are mixed by gender, but the bathrooms aren’t. So half a hallway may have a balance in favor of or against one gender, leading to under-use of a bathroom.
