and what would you like to know about Hill?

more info on the quad please =)

well what do you want to know that's not already in the college house brochure / website?

so i'm thinking i wanna live on the quad freshman year, but i'm in SEAS. is the quad out of the way so that it'd be an annoyance to go to my classes from there? or is it really not that big of a deal? i already know hill and KCECH are closer, but i think i want the whole classic college quad scene for freshman year

quad is plenty fine for any school - you'll be fine for seas

okay, thanks! and im deciding between riepe and ware... is there a big diff between the two? like what types of people live there and what are pros/cons of both?

I happened to stumble upon youtube videos that toured each college house.

YouTube - Ware College House at Penn

Take a look at some of the other ones by the same user name. They're actually pretty interesting and informative.

riepe, ware, and fisher are more or less identical

is hill really...as bad as people say? i know there's no AC, but kings court doesn't have it either.
i want to live in the quad or kings court (because i already have a bias against hill thanks to some friends), and i'm also thinking about Harnwell (for the music performance & composition residential program). is high-rise housing advisable for frosh year?

From what I've seen, I really like Harrison... how is it?

Harrison - not so good for freshman year. You'll be tight with the other freshmen there, but that's about it.

Hill - definitely not as bad as people say. obviously everything you hear about small rooms/no AC is true, but so is what you hear about bonding/etc. and having a dining hall in your building is waaaaay more convenient than you can imagine.

If we put down the three Quad houses as our first three housing choices when the time comes, how likely do you think it is that we would get there? Is it competitive, or if you want to live in the Quad is it pretty likely? Also, my college advisor said that a lot of schools give housing priority to people who were accepted ED... Is this the case at Penn?

^^^^ That would be a well appreciated perk right there.

No priority for ED kids. I think about half of the freshmen live in the quad, and probably 80-90 percent put it for their first three choices, so maybe like 60 or 70 percent chance of getting it?

^ completely unscientific arbitrary numbers

Yeah, I also wanted to know the differences between the different quad houses. Are they really the same?

dancer16, I'm with you.. I'm in SEAS but the quad seemed more appealing as a freshman.

All the quad houses are 99% the same. Fisher's farthest to the west, Ware's in the middle, and Riepe's on the east. They have different residential programs, but residential programs don't mean anything.

No difference in housing preference for ED, as the housing lottery isn't until May.

Out of 2500 in the class, something like 1000 freshmen live in the quad, 500 live in hill, and maybe 300 live in KC/EH, with the others distributed among the other houses.

The dining hall in hill is convenient. You only really need AC the first and last week of the year.

For freshmen, school/house combination doesn't really matter. The classes are all in the same locations since you're mostly taking general ed. requirements, and all of the on-campus housing is basically in the same area. Just don't live in the high rises as a freshman, and Gregory/DuBois are a bit far for engineers and nurses.

okay so i'm prolly just gonna put quad houses down for first three, but i noticed fisher has healthy living/wellness housing/substance free or whatever. i'm gonna be careful saying this haha but i'd like to experience a little of the social part of college... not saying i'm a huge partier but i don't really wanna miss out on a little bit of it lol so would living in fisher prevent that?

Technically you cannot drink in any college house if you are under 21 and you cannot do any illegal controlled substances in any college house ever. These rules are broken daily. If you are written up for something in a normal hall you get a slap on the wrist for your first offence. If you are in the healthy living program you could lose housing for your first offense. Fisher might have the program, but you only have to live healthy if you are in the program.

Someone from Yale told the my admins say that the drinking age should be 18 and practically allow it, and the New Haven police are all fine with it as long as it's on Yale property. Is it a similar situation at Penn?

^basically. unless your RA is a total a-hole you won't get in trouble unless you're incredibly loud or putting others in danger
