Best in Physics?

What are the best schools for Physics Majors? Rankings?

For undergraduate (in no particular order):

UC Berkeley
Stanford
U Illinois
U Chicago
Harvard
MIT
Cornell
Columbia

In no particular order: Princeton, Stanford, Chicago, MIT, Berkeley, Cornell, Columbia, Caltech, Harvard

add UC Santa Barbara on there as well.

how bout northwestern?

was harvard famous for its engineering courses?
I heard someone saying its ranked outside of 20 for physics and most of its engineering courses aren't too good apart from biology.

As good as Harvard is, it isn't the hottest engineering school--still better than average though!

My Physics teacher makes a really big deal of Caltech being number one in Physics. But I've learned not to necessarily believe everything he says though(don't ask...). I know Caltech is really good but how well does it rank?

I'm not an expert ranker, but Harvey Mudd College (Claremont, CA) is supposed to have an excellent Physics program -- they teach undergrads only.

KupMup: I didn't include Caltech in my original list in my first post by accident; Caltech's an excellent school for Physics.

Tlqkf2002, I think it's fair to say that Harvard is one of the most elite places to go to study physics. Harvard may not be the best place to go for engineering (a certain other nearby school probably is the best place for engineering), but that has nothing to do with the quality of the physics education per se. Engineering and science are two separate things.

your teacher is right..caltech has been owning physics since before you were born

For an undergraduate or graduate education, the best places for physics would be:
Harvard, Princeton, MIT, Stanford, Caltech

For Graduate Study (these schools have fantastic physics departments but lack undergraduate focus):
Chicago, Berkeley

Cornell and Columbia have fantastic physics programs as well but id have to put them slightly behind the aforementioned schools. As for soliloquy's list, U Illinois but no Princeton?

In addition to Caltech, I forgot to put Princeton; my apologies. It's quite embarassing to forget those two schools for Physics in a list of rankings. :(

Chicago certainly has as much, or more, undergrad focus than Harvard, MIT, and Stanford.

Caltech is number one for the serious.

Columbia Cal Tech and UCSB awesome programs
