Best in the Pac 10

Note about SAT: none of those are really accurate since Cal, UCLA, Stanford, and USC all use the 3 combined scores  I’ve found the most accurate information is found on the school’s websites. The fact that the collegeboard and PR differ in their records is reason enough.

For me:
Someone earlier mentioned ASU was listed in SI (not specified for what), but 2 years ago UCLA was actually ranked first in the nation for best overall athletic, academic and social experience by SI. I think it’s probably certainly best in the Pac-10 in that regard (though Furd has an amazing athletic program, it’s success lies mainly in golf, tennis and the likes, not huge spectator sports there, from my understanding). So, as of right now, I’d say:

UCLA, Berkeley/Stanford, UW, USC, Oregon, ASU, WSU, UA, OSU
But I’d say the top-3 could be interchangeable depending on their current athletic success

Any way you spin it though, it’s a great conference in any regard!

*As for the SC marching band: Conquest rivals It’s a Small World After All for most torturous theme song in LA. Please, can we think of a 3rd or 4th line?

I’m gonna have to disagree again UCLA Band Mom,

^agreed usc does have the best cheerleading squad in the nation.

Athletics: UCLA, Stanford, USC

I don’t know about all this band talk, but USC’s is awful (that song is terrible). Stanford’s “band” is by far the most entertaining, and I’m saying that as a bear =P

[quote]
NCAA Championships: UCLA
Technically not true unless you are limiting yourself to only football and basketball. The true measure of NCAA championship is the Director’s Cup. Stanford won 14 years in a row, 14 out of the 15 years the award was offered. To UCLA’s credit, it came in 2nd five times and 3rd four times.

“The NACDA Directors’ Cup is an award given annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics to the colleges and universities with the most success in collegiate athletics. Points for the NACDA Director’s Cup are based on order of finish in various NCAA sponsored championships or in the case of Division I Football media base polls… Stanford University has won the award for the best Division I collegiate athletics program for 14 straight years, winning 14 out of the 15 years it has been offered.” (ref: wikipedia)

UDub can arguably compete for this honor. It’s 3K-5K more expensive than UA but it offers better education … and it’s in Seattle.

GoBlue:
The Director’s Cup is not a measure of championships, it is a measure of overall athletic success based on points assigned to rank order finish in each sport, with a maximum of ten mens and ten womens sports being counted. It is entirely possible to win the Director’s Cup every year and never win a championship (in fact if a school finished second in every sport, they WOULD WIN the Director’s Cup every year, but never raise a championship banner).

UCLA has the most championships, that is a fact. Stanford is a pretender, they rack up most of their awards in tennis and golf, really exciting at the college level.

“Westwood High”
(Sons of Westwood)
lyrics by the USC Marching Band

High up in the hills of Westwood
Sprawled offensive to the eye
Lies a Cal extension campus
Known as Westwood High. (high, high, high)
Home of all the Bruin bearcubs
UGLY is its name,
The student body’s vile,
The football team’s a pile,
And the campus is a shame.

I will admit that I am biased towards my school, I go to USC.

I honestly believe that we are now at an academic level of that of Berkeley and UCLA, and we have the numbers to prove that, but we have a way to go before catching Stanford. I DONT CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS ABOUT ACADEMICS or even athletics, we are what we are, to me it is a lame argument.

But when it comes to partying, with normal kids, who can hold a conversation and do things other than go to the library, or joke about politics, there is no way Stanford, UCLA, or Berkeley come close to USC.

I party with a lot of UCLA kids (most from their Greek Community), and they hate their school’s social scene, they always say that its soo hard to find fun people who want to party, and have fun.

HOW IS THAT THE BEST SOCIAL SCENE, c’mon now, i will give ground on all the other arguments, but being here and having been to all the schools mentioned the only schools that compete with USC on social atmosphere are ASU and UofA.

Stanford is the best school in the Pac 10!

(Okay, I need to stop this, time for breakfast)

Best Mascot: Arizona State’s Sparky

This Disney Designed mascot is so devilishly good that he was swiped by Orange Julius. And so devilishly bad that he was hidden from view when the Pope held Mass at Arizona Sundevil Stadium.

Weirdest Mascot: Stanford’s Tree.

I don’t “get” the tree mascot. The Stanford Alumni don’t exactly embrace it either. I have seen them show up at football games wearing large buttons that read “Once an Indian, Always an Indian”. They don’t seem to appreciate Stanford’s politically correct Cardinal name either.

Most enthusiastic football fans: USC.

Most apathetic football fans: Stanford.

Best Marching Band Uniforms: UCLA

I think that your name gives away your bias, hah.

Do you really think that UCLA has the best band? I am just asking to see if you were joking or not?

Yes, I really do.

I first saw UCLA perform at a High School Band tournament back in 2000 when my son was a high school freshman. The competing high school bands, as well as the crowd went wild for them. My son immediately decided that he wanted to go to UCLA. He just graduated.

i think USC has better academic facilities than ucla…
also just like someone said USC has the better alumi network..i have lived in 4 dofferent countries and i´m always meeting USC alumi..
as for academics…Stanford, berkeley USC UCLA
best social life:USC and ASU
best location:UCLA hands down, ASU(very nice area).´
overall i would go with UCLA and USC

UCLA is too homogeneous, even the surrounding city of Westwood is one big suburb. Stanford suffers from the same problem (to an even greater extent).

Can’t beat the University of Special Connections when trying to land a job in SoCal, though =P
