Best institutes of technology?

Hi, I'm looking forward to going to a decent institute of technology, possibly MIT. However, my grades aren't that great, nor is my financial situation. I am not so worried about the finances, as if I can go to a good school, like MIT, it will lead me to a good job, and I won't have an issue with paying for it ;)

What are the best alternatives to MIT?

caltech(as competitive as mit if not more) or cmu.....and possibly georgetech

California, Massachusetts, Georgia, Carnegie Mellon.

Don't count on it. Look at MIT's starting salary for graduates:
<a href="http://web.mit.edu/career/www/infostats/graduation05.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://web.mit.edu/career/www/infostats/graduation05.pdf</a></p>

Compare that to the national salary for engineering
<a href="http://money.cnn.com/2005/04/15/pf/college/starting_salaries/%5B/url%5D">http://money.cnn.com/2005/04/15/pf/college/starting_salaries/</a></p>

Not a big difference, and certainly not financially worthy of the 200k price tag over 4 years.

Caltech and MIT are more or less in a class by themselves. Then Georgia Tech, Carnegie Mellon. Then Virginia Tech, RPI.

Rochester is supposed to be good as well.

Then after RPI and Virginia Tech there is Case Western. After Case Western there are Drexel, Northeastern, Michigan Tech, and Colorado School of Mines. After Colorado School of Mines there are Illinois Inst of Tech, Worcester Polytech, and Rochester Inst of Tech.

Virginia Tech, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Rensalaer Polytechnic Institute, Oregon State University, Clemson University

This might be a silly question, but is there a list of the top Technical universities? If there isn't, can somebody make one?

Honestly, I wouldn't mind going to Rochester, as it's in my state.

And as for the starting salary, thats still more than either of my parents are making!

Any suggestions for cheap schools?

If your grades aren't that great, why are you thinking about MIT, CalTech, Berkeley,GTech,CMU, etc.? I hate to say it, but if you want to study in a technical area, you aren't going to get into these schools without stellar grades.....

I would look at the second and third tier of these and know that those are great schools too and if you do well at them you can go anywhere for grad school. Rochester, for instance, would be a great choice.

yes there is a top 20 technical universities ranking... none of them are cheap. They are all top tier(it's worldwide ranking). CMC is on it however.
Rochester, Vtech, Gtech, Rensalaer, IIT, Drexel etc. are all good ones too.

Maybe Rice? Great school, lower cost than some of the others (#4 value among privates...average debt @ graduation is 13k). What do you want to study? Maybe North Carolina State if you're interested in engineering. It's less competitive than some of the other schools.

And internationally, IIT takes the cake.

Here are the schools with at least 20% of their bachelors degrees in computer science, information technology, engineering, or engineering technologies. Harvey Mudd was excluded but has a high percent engineering grads. IPEDS 2006

Anybody know what NYIT is like? reputationwise? I live in NY nd in the area, so it'd be perfect.

NYIT is a joke please don't go there it's a waste of an education.
