Best Ivy for Music?

45percenter, I quite probably deserve a fairly robust headsmack for not mentioning Penn and throwing in an unsolicited MIT plug. Trust me, the absence of Penn in my comments was unintentional, and does reflect on the quality of the Penn music programs.

Mea culpa.

No one has mentioned the cooperative program between Harvard and the New England Conservatory. Tufts, not an Ivy but close, also has such a program.

Again, the OP addressed a general question about music at the Ivys. The Harvard/Tufts cooperative is a possibility, but is extremely selective and enrollment is limited. It may work for some, but logistics issues tend to be a stumbling block for many. The Harvard/NEC combined program is even more selective, requires admission and acceptance to BOTH schools, and NEC is as tough an audition based admit as Harvard is academically. Single digit annual enrollment in this program is the norm. Might as well touch on the Columbia/Juilliard cross registration program, again extremely selective, small acceptance rate, and applicable to but a few.

These programs are out there and available. Seek out those that been there. They require exceptional talent, ability, and dedication across both academic and music disciplines. Even among those that are accepted, the attrition, drop rates are high.

If you are of the caliber required to be considered, by all means investigate and utilize the programs if at all applicable.

This was not the purpose or level I surmised in addressing the OP's question.

I don't know why Chicago's rank is so high on that list. Maybe our music education department is good, but from what I've heard, the focus is definitely not on instrumental music.

Since the topic is already broached and expanded upon beyond the OP's initial question, I'll draw attention to some new info on the joint programs mentioned in my #23 to today's post by mamenyu http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1061263801-post440.html in CC's Music Major forum.

Sorry to revive an old topic buuut, is Chicago really better than UMich for music?

Shizzle, Michigan’s school of Music is performance-based and considered one of the top 5 programs in the nation. Chicago’s Music department is part of the college of Arts and Sciences and is theory-based. If you are interested in Music Theory and History, Chicago is probably going to be slightly better. If you are interested in performance or composition, Michigan will be better.

[College of Visual and Performing Arts : Setnor School of Music](http://vpa.syr.edu/index.cfm/page/music)

Nuff said.
