The Dean says that winning most competitions "doesnt necessarily make you stand out in a hyper-competitive crowd". He lists Siemens, Intel, Jeopardy, and American Idol as the impressive ones. Which other competitions "will make admission folks sit up and take notice" ?

Lol if you win American Idol, college admissions will be the last thing you’ll be thinking about.

hmmm…I’m going to bet winning NFL Nationals or TOC is a biggie. Meredith Potter and Stacey Chen were both national champs and are both at Yale

^ Hahahahahaha yeahhh. Winning Nats is really good. Winning TOC (especially in Policy) is freakishly amazing and you’ll probably be recruited anywhere you want :P

USAMO, USABO, USNCO, USAPhO, etc. Basically all the international science olympiads. Also, if you make it to IMO/IBO/IChO/IPhO, then more power to you.

I want to know that, by ‘winning a competition’, does the adcom mean just qualifying for the competitions (Intel, USAMO, Siemens) or actually winning them? Because i think just making the qualifier of USAMO or Intel ISEF is already amazing.

you have to be more than amazing to get into some of the colleges :)

Winning fantasy football
