Best LA schools in New England for film -- besides Emerson!

My S really, really wants to go to Emerson. It seems pretty unlikely that he will get accepted because his GPA is much lower than what seems to be their average. He is very intelligent (very high IQ) but his GPA is only 2.9 because of low grades in math and science. He will have a very good porfolio of film work, though, and great recommendation letters. He also attended summer film programs at NY Film Academy (2008) and Emerson (2009). SAT: 700 reading, 640 writing, 550 math. He has been absolutely passionate about film for the past 3 years and I think that will be evident both in his essays (he is an excellent writer, so his essays are really good) and his teacher recommendations (these teachers know him very well). He attends a very small private high school.

My question is, are there other film schools that come close to Emerson? Two things he does not want are (1) more than 4 hour drive from Boston and (2) a large university.

Other schools he is planning to apply to: Hampshire, Champlain, SUNY Purchase, Quinnipiac (he didn't love it when he visited, but he is applying), Keene State, and Ithaca (which is farther than we'd like, but their film curriculum looks great).

Any other suggestions or recommendations?

There’s Mass Art in Boston. Not a LAC but a great deal if you live in MA and are willing to do a foundation year. If he is considering Ithaca , RIT is an option if you go another hour. Also not an LAC.

My son is a freshman in the Film Production program at RIT and is very happy with his classes.

If you don’t mind telling me…How many AP and Honors courses has your son taken?

There are not a lot of Honors classes at his school, because it’s so small. Actually no AP, just Honors, and only select classes. Anyway, he has only taken one Honors class, and it was Spanish.

If your son is looking at Champlain for film, I would also recommend Burlington College. It is also in Burlington, VT and has had a longstanding film program. It’s not a large university, its actually a very small college, but your son will get a lot individual attention there.
