Hi!

I'm interested in a liberal arts education with a strong focus on the visual arts/design. Career wise I am interested in the direction of art, but for college at least I would prefer a liberal arts education.

I have a very strong academic record and an unweighted GPA of 4.0, so I was wondering which of the following LAC's would you reccommend and which ones are the best in the Visual Arts?

Amherst
Wellesley
Pomona
Swarthmore
Vassar

I suspect Vassar has the biggest Art focus on this list. You might also look at Wesleyan and Bard.

Brown is right near a design school (RISD) and there may be some joint programs.

I would agree that Vassar is probably the most artistically-inclined school on your list. There is a Brown/RISD dual degree program. However, it is incredibly difficult to get into.

I would agree with ctP that of these schools Vassar offers the most "artsy" environment, but I wouldn't say that studio art is its strongest area. The others definitely have art departments, but not a major strength in what are otherwise really, really good colleges.

For very strong visual arts plus excellent academics in the liberal arts setting I'd look at Williams, Wesleyan, Hamilton, Kenyon, Conn College, Oberlin, Skidmore, Smith.

Smith College is definitely worth considering. The Smith College Museum of Art is terrificl! Smith College Museum of Art - Home

Smith is also part of the 5-college consortium (with Amherst, Hampshire, Mt. Holyoke and Univ Mass). You can take classes at any.
