I heard that a liberal arts college does a better job to prepare you for the mcat and you have a better chance for medical school. But I also heard that their high medical school acceptance rates are because of weeding out. What are good colleges that is good for pre med and also give me a chance to get into top medical schools like Harvard, John Hopkins, UCSF, etc...

1) There are advantages and disadvantages to both research universities and LACs. It depends what kind of learning environment you want.

2) All colleges and universities weed out pre meds vigorously.

SIDEBAR: any data a college puts out about how many/what percentage of their students get into med school is not to be trusted/believed. The data get manipulated in about 1000 different ways to make the college look good.

3) It’s the student who gets the student accepted into med school, not the college. Almost any college or university in the US will adequately prepare a student to apply to medical school. It’s the student’s personal achievements/grades/scores/drive which get them accepted. If you look at the accepted classes at top ranked (I hate that term because it’s not accurate) med schools, you’ll see both students from Ivy schools and students from totally no-name colleges.

BDM gives great advice.

thx for bsm’s thread. it was actually really helpful!

oops i meant bdm

WOWM, I really wish we could make your post mandatory reading for any thread with best and pre-med in it…

Perhaps you should cut and paste it into a folder for copying multiple times. ;)

aquaelmo - I’ve talked with many current med school students who treasure their research school undergrad and some from LACs who wish they had chosen that route due to not having the research options these schools offer. I’ve also talked with students who had no interest in that type of research who loved their LACs. Investigate all options and see which type of learning appeals to you. Either can get you into med school, but at either, YOU will be the one who has to make it happen.

Many LACs are excellent for premed coursework. Just make sure you pick one with a decent science program, with more than just a handful of grads every year. (see IPEDS for grads by major.) Williams, for example, recently opened a multi-million $ science building.

In general, all the top suspects are top LACs for a reason – they do most everything well (including sciences).
