Best-language to self-teach?

I'm looking to teach myself a new language. I take French in high school (AP this year), and was wondering what would be a good language to try and teach myself. I tried to use my dad's old German textbook, but I found that fairly difficult to teach myself without the help of an instructor. I've also slightly dabbled in Italian (mainly learned numbers). I saw that someone recommended the website LiveMocha, but I found that to be absolutely useless. I looked at the Arabic lessons on there, and it didn't even bother to try and teach the alphabet, it just jumped right in to vocabulary.

What language do you recommend, and how do you recommend learning it?

Spanish would probably be the easiest.

The Romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese,Catalan) are all pretty easy relative to other languages.

I left out Romanian, because it is has a large Slavic component and is a ***** to learn on your own, as well as French and Italian since you already touched on those.

If you are trying to learn a language quickly I’d go for Spanish and Catalan. While they are distinct languages they build on each other pretty well.

Spanish is a really easy language to learn

German. You already know English and both of them are Germanic languages.

I know it’s not Chinese.

I actually didn’t find Chinese to hard but have taken 8 years of Spanish and haven’t got a single thing in my brain. It really depends on your interests in culture and language. I don’t like the Spanish/Latin American culture much but i find Asian and northern European cultures fascinating.

Maybe Latin? If you can teach yourself Latin, you can teach yourself any other Romance language.

I find Chiese extremely hard!

Latin actually wouldn’t be that hard to teach to yourself at first, but eventually you’d hit a point where you really NEED some kind of guidance.

I tried German, but like I said, I really struggled trying to do that one solo. As for Latin, I was really looking for one I could actually speak. I might try Spanish. Thanks for your help!!

I’ve used LiveMocha and I can’t say I think it’s as good as it could be.
Easiest I would have to say is American Sign-Language. You don’t have to listen to someone talking at you for pronunciation. I know you might have been looking more for a “cultural” kind of language, though.
