Best laptop for college, money not an issue*

*unless its preposterous

My parents are hooking me up with a laptop for my hi school graduation, so i wondering what type to get. I've never had macbook before, but it seems like most college students use one.

Any suggestions?

What do you want to be able to do with your laptop?

Why don't you do some research and find out what you really want and need?

i need a powerhouse that i can carry around without breaking my back. Im a big music/movie guy, but i dont wanna carry a external harddrive around or anything

Macbook for shure.

watching a movie or playing/editing music doesn't require all that much power...

anything 15" or less, in your place i would get a 13 or 14" and buy external speakers and a monitor.

as for a specific computer, Macbook Pro. also poke around the Asus site.

The Asus M50Sv-A1 is a great deal. Plenty of power and a great price.

Lenovo Thinkpad, definitely. It'll cost quite a bit, but it'll never break. It's a business-quality laptop.

go to notebookreview.com and ask them

Are Lenovo Thinkpad's also good for watching lots of videos, listening to lots of music, and doing a bit of gaming? Or are they only for business purposes? I'm thinking of getting one over the summer because they are actually a good deal (I made a custom one on their website and made a laptop with the same stats as a dell laptop, the thinkpad was $1300, the Dell was $1650).

pretty much any laptop is good for watching movies and playing music...

Agree with 888etc - Macbook is fabulous. You won't regret it. Take a free class at your local Mac store if you're doubtful.

Whether or not you want to carry around an external hard-drive, I'd recommend anyway just so you can back up your files. If you do decide to get a Mac, Time Capsule would be a great choice.

^I heard you can back up your files on more convenient online "storage rooms."

You can, but uploading takes forever on most connections. Not to mention if its physically backed up then you don't have to worry about the web service going down or not getting internet at the time.

^
if you back up on the internet you don't have to worry if you drop your disk, your disk got stolen, you forgot to bring your disk with you etc etc.

Macbook Pro (starts at $2k)

OS X, reliability, design, and VMWare (allows you to run OS X and Windows at the same time) make it walk all over PCs.

I can give a much longer rant, but I'll just provide that sentence.

While I'm a PC guy, the build quality of the larger MBPs is pretty excellent. Price premium, but if price is not an issue...excellent quality, ability to run Windows XP or Vista, and Mac OS X (legally, of course), as well as Linux.

I say get a Voodoo :D

VoodooPC Gaming PCs, Luxury PCs, Notebook PCs, and Entertainment PCs

Yeah, I forgot to mention Falcon Northwest or Voodoo. Really, really top $$$, but great quality.
